Team Texas Junior National Duals Recap

This year’s junior duals wraps up with Texas blue finishing eighth in the bronze pool, and Texas red finishing second in the green/yellow pool.
The blue team suffered a few hits again in the last day of competition. They had already lost Jordan Haskins to a chipped femur in his hip. Next it was Brice Clexton with a shoulder injury, and Collin Lawler was out with a displaced rib. With Adam Killgore also out of the tournament that was four very big hits to the blue team. However all of the other guys stepped up the best they could, and every dual they wrestled yesterday was close. It was guys like Colton Williams and Nathan Grimes who consistently put up dominating wins for their team.  I can’t help but to think if we could have kept all of the pieces in place that the blue team had a very good chance of finishing in the front of the bronze pool. Forfeits definitely hurt, giving up 10 points each dual, and then hoping our back ups could hold their own at a few other weights. The blue team lost four duals in the bronze pool by total of 31 points,  30 of those were due to forfeit. Not to mention one kids Poor decision that cost us 3 team points.

The red team got the ball rolling Friday night in the first round and it kept going through out yesterday, only dropping the final match to a very good Iowa blue team.
They got the momentum going and finished strong just like we thought they would.

The first goal we had leaving camp was to get better this last week. If we won the tournament great,  but we wanted to get better first. I believe we achieved just that, I saw all of the kids progress in many areas. For some it looked like they could not find a win,  but yet managed to get one by the last day. For others that maybe did  not win but managed to finally score points, pick up their takedown percentage, or even shot attempts. For a few that may have been in too deep of water, we just talked to them about making their goals smaller and staying focused on improving in areas they needed to each match. Even for those that were getting their fair share of wins, we still focused on what they were lacking, and what needed to be done in the next match to improve it.
This was our basic blue print to help them all achieve our goal of getting better.

The Cadet 106 pounder, Jordan Strmiska, finishes strong going undefeated in the freestyle and earning all tournament honors. Jordan is this years Outstanding Wrestler for Team Texas National Freestyle dual team.

Collin Lawler earning All Tournament honors in the Greco, is this year’s outstanding wrestler for the team Texas National Greco dual team.

Each year I give out an Iron Man  award for the kid that just brings it every day in both styles during the lengthy week of competition. It generally goes to a guy who wrestles the most wins the most . Many leave it all out there every day , and their overall effort is more than deserving. However In the end it has to go to the wrestler that just plain gets it done.
I think this kid only received one forfeit the entire week and won every match he wrestled but one. The team Texas freestyle MOW winner, cadet Jordan Strmiska,  also wins this years Team Texas Junior duals IronMan award. Jordan came out hitting on all cylinders every day of the competition. Being as young as he is ,handling his weight the way he did,  and competing at the level he did each day was most impressive. He just plain pounded the competition.

Congratulations to Jordan and Collin both, exceptional week of competition for these guys.

Just about gave an award to the kid who was the biggest influence on the rest of the team and coaches as well.
A kid that redefines the words “heart” and “try.” Although I know this guy wouldn’t want it,  everyone who was on the team knows who that recipient would be. One of the toughest guys we’ve all been around no doubt??

Big thanks to the coaches who took time away from their jobs and their families to help this years team out. Jose Lazo,  Ray Bedford,  and Travis Clark , Did an outstanding job as always.
Thank you!
