18th Annual Cy-Fair ISD Boys Invitational Recap

When the dust had settled, 99 teams had wrestlers compete on 16 mats in Cy-Fair ISD’s Berry Center for the 18thannual Cy-Fair ISD Invitational.  Cypress Ridge Head Coach Tim Ray and the rest of the CFISD coaches & staff once again hosted one of the most competitive tournaments in the State. The 1st tourney of the new year is always fun.  The picture of contenders vs. pretenders starts to become clear, and the 2 pound allowance seems to elevate some wrestlers and provide road blocks for others.  The team battles this year were incredible.  In the top 5 teams, ALL 4 UIL Regions were represented.  In addition to this, 5 A was Very well represented with Midlothian and A&M Consolidated both breaking into the top 10

  1. Southlake Carroll – Region I
  2. Rockwall – Region II
  3. Cypress Ranch – Region III
  4. Prosper Region – II
  5. Schertz Clemens – Region IV
  6. Klein High School – Region II
  7. Plano West – Region II
  8. Midlothian – 5A
  9. A&M Consol. – 5A
  10. Rockwall Heath – Region II

With defending 6A State Champion Allen High (region II) hosting their home tourney the same weekend, the depth in Region II 6A is starting to become apparent.

Southlake’s Win here is impressive for a few reasons

  1. Only placed 6 wrestlers in the 14 weight classes
  2. Their highest placing wrestler was 4thplace (Blake Gaskill @ 152 losing the 3rdplace match to a battle hardened Caleb Mata of Houston Clear Lake by Dec 7-3)
  3. They scored team points in 13 out of the 14 weight classes.

Hats off to Southlake for making the trip, and making it count!!

On the 5A scene, Midlothian and A&M Consol. Are looking like legitimate threats at a team title when they return to the Berry Center. They finished 8thand 9threspectively and were only separated by 2 points (130 – 128).

At  106 Eamonn Jimenez for Killeen Ellison took the win after coming down from 113.  Eamonn is building a strong season after coming off of a State runner up Performance at Texas Freestyle State last Spring.  These lower weights are always littered with talented freshmen.  This tourney saw Cypress Ranch’s Alexander Robeson-Moreira  Make the medal stand in 3rdplace in his 1sthigh school campaign.

113 saw a ton of new faces. The only placers at this weight class who did not come down  from 120 were Freshman Timothy McGuire of Klein (7th) and Junior Kyle Edwards of Euless Trinity (8th).  Taking home an impressive win was Justin Rodriquez of El Paso Pebble Hill (Ranked 5th6A 120lbs.).  Biggest surprise of this weight was Freshman Jacob Kehrer of Rockwall Heath with his second place finish.

At 120, Sr. Christian Lopez put on a clinic with his 1stplace finish.  The returning state placer is establishing himself as a legitimate threat for a title this season.  His talents will be on display again next weekend at his home tournament , the Houston Westside Chicken Wing Classic.

Region III was dominant force at 126 with Reuben Calderon of Cy-Falls taking the win over Cole Minnick of Katy Tompkins. Jude Camacho of Cy-Ranch finished third.  Expect these young men to pave a path for region III to the State Tournament.

Tagen Jamison of Plano West, traveled south and backed up his #1 ranking by ripping through the 132 bracket! Young buck Sophomore Michael Bone of Katy Taylor earned a runner up finish here at a weight were the upperclassmen are the dominant force.

Deshawn Cosby of Shertz Clemens earned an 11-4 victory over Brady Earhart of Plano West for the Championship at 138.  Will there anyone who can challenge Deshawn at 138 in region IV?!?!?

145 Saw Tyler Ramirez of New Braunfels Take the gold. Tyler looked like a senior on a mission this weekend!!

152 saw Aaron Lofton of Vista Ridge capture the Individual title, but also take home the  Most outstanding wrestler recognition as well!!! Aaron never saw the 3rdperiod this weekend, Pinning or tech falling his opponents in the 1st2 minutes until the championship match where he needed a full 4 min to earn a tech fall over his opponent.  Congrats to Aaron on an Incredible 2 days of wrestling!!

160 saw Senior Micah Wiginton of Pflugerville Weiss continue his unbeaten season to take the CFISD title. This weight was dominated by the out of towners!! The lone Houston Area Representative was Junior Johnathan Ward of Klein High.

170 saw another unbeaten in Darwin Hull of Shertz Clemens take the title over Houston Area Representative Paul Moore of The Woodlands High School.

182 may have been the best bracket in the state this weekend with Wrestlers ranked 1,2,3,7,12,18 in 6A and 13 in 5A  and one wrestler ranked 7th@ 195 in 5A  on the medal stand.  When the dust settled, Junior Eli Sheeren of Klein High School established himself as the clear winner and solidified his #1 ranking.

The Final at 195 put #1 @ 5A Aiden Jean of Justin Northwest against 6A #3 Deandre Rucker of Klein Collins. The match DID NOT disappoint!! The match was back and forth and tied at 7 going into the final period when Jean chose bottom and turned a reversal into a pin with 8 seconds left in the match.  This one was worth the price of admission!

It was the 5A classification outshining everyone at 220.  Kaleb Tompkins of Midlothian was 1st, Jason Lund of Azle was 2ndand Sam Montoya of A&M Consol. In 3rd.  This final was another nail biter with Kaleb Tompkins eking out the 1 point victory in the first tie breaker period!

It was Midlothian at 285! This time Marshal Hodges Got the 1 point victory over Katy Taylor’s Curshawn Wilkins in Sudden Victory.

When all the mats were cleared, 99 Men’s and women’s teams had graced the circle in CFISD Berry Center. Coach Tim Ray (meet organizer and Head Coach at Cy-Ridge), couldn’t have been more proud, stating, “This was the Largest CFISD Tournament ever!  Is was a Complete Team Effort including the Berry Center Staff, Athletic Admin Department, and my fellow CFISD wrestling coaches.  CFISD Student athletes even ran the tables.  WHAT AN AWESOME TOURNAMENT!!”
