For those associated with St. Marks School of Texas wrestling program the annual tournament is a big deal.

The private school in Dallas hosted its 55th annual Lonestar Christmas Open on Saturday. In a gym with superlatives in sports back to the 1930s, the wrestling program that started in the late 1960s is also an old one compared to many in the DFW area. 

Taking pride in the long running event is one thing. Parents, alumni and junior high students help make it work. 

Doing well, that’s an extra bit of motivation for the Lions.

The host team won three championships on Saturday and finished seventh overall in a 24-team field with schools from Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Oklahoma. 

Quina Perkison won the 106-pound title. 

He won by a pin in the semifinals and escaped with a 10-8 win over Kingston Stephens of Dallas Jesuit College Prep. 

Beau Bacon followed with a title at 132. 

He went 3-0 with all pins. He secured his title with a fall in 3:09 over Noah Schutter of Frisco Lone Star. 

The last title went to Wyatt Loehr at 175. 

He recalls helping in this tournament during the 50th anniversary while he was in junior high, even getting a t-shirt to celebrate the milestone anniversary. 

Now, he’s a champion in the tournament. 

Loehr (16-2) went 4-0 with four pins. 

Three of pins came in the third period, capped with a fall at 3:53 against Carrollton Creekview’s De`Andre Richardson.

Tuscaloosa County came from Alabama and won the team title with 209 points. Lone Star was second with 143. Creekview placed third with 124 1/2 points. Prosper Walnut Grove took fourth with 122 points.
