The 23rd annual Cy-Fair invitational wrestling tournament was held this past Friday and Saturday at the Berry Center, which is also home of the Texas State Championships in February. It was a busy day throughout Texas this weekend as nine tournaments were being held simultaneously, with a total of 264 teams and 2,265 boys in action. The CFISD tournament was by far the largest with 92 teams and 855 boys in the brackets.

As usual for an early January tournament, wrestlers are testing their limits by attempting to see if they can handle a lower weight class. Generous weight allowances allowed the wrestlers to try their hands in those lower weight classifications, which worked well for some, and not so well for others, as five wrestlers who were still alive heading to the semifinals, busted weight, thereby bowing out of the tournament.

Aztec High School, the defending 4A team from Aztec, New Mexico wasted no time in making their presence known, as they had six of their team advance into the semifinals. Five of those six who advanced placed at the NM state championships last season.  In this tournament they ended up with one champion, two silver medals, two 4th place medalists, one fifth place medalist, one sixth place medalist, and one eighth place medalist. Unfortunately for them, they needed one more point to overcome the half point lead that Clear Lake had over them in the final standings.

This year’s tournament illustrates that the best 5A wrestlers can compete on a high level with the best from 6A. I believe the following results will bear this to be a fact.

Let’s review the first-place matches.

106 lbs.

Sebastian Garcia (30-3) of Bridgeland took on Nathan Hare of Aztec, the junior who did not participate in last year’s postseason. Hare pinned 5A #1 Esteban Vela (his first loss of the year), decisioned 6A #16 Camden Sortor, and was the recipient of a forfeit by 5A #6 Santiago Miranda (possibly a weight bust) to get to the finals.

Garcia had notable wins over 6A #10 (113 lbs.) Zaiden Hernandez and 6A #5/second seed Felix Morales (WBF 3:02)  making his way to meet Ware in the finals.

Garcia shot a straight on single and grabbed the other ankle on the way in for another takedown right as the whistle ended the period. 9-2 lead for Garcia. Hare deferred his choice and Garcia chose neutral. Garcia continued shooting through the second period, but was not successful with a double and a single. He defended a deep shot by Hare and came up with an awkward hold that looked like a reverse cradle, good enough for a NF2. 14-2 Garcia going into the third.

Hare chose top, after three caution calls between the two wrestlers, and Garcia for false starts and potentially dangerous arm bar. Despite almost catching Garcia more than once, Hare was unable to score any points in the period. Final score, Garcia 14 – Hare 2.

113 lbs.

Kingston Stephens, the undefeated, number one seed, and ranked #2 from Dallas Jesuit was matched against Kenneth Nichols of Klein. Nichols, ranked #7 at 120 tested the waters in the lower weight for this tournament. He had the tenth seed. Nichols had an impressive run to the finals, beating wrestlers ranked #10 (Knadler), #8 (Coffel), and #3 (Morales), who have combined records of 67-4. Stephens defeated 5A’s #5 (Baker) and #8 (Colbath) ranked wrestlers as well as 6A #13 (Buenteo) on his way to his match with Nichols.

The first period of the match was scoreless as each wrestler tried to gauge what they could get over the other. Nichols deferred and Stephens chose down. Stephens stood and escaped, then shot a quick, deep single which Nichols defended for almost 45 seconds before the official signaled a takedown.

The third period began with Stephens up 4-0, and both wrestlers in the neutral position. Nichols shot for a cross single and Stephens slid around for his second takedown. Nichols scored an escape with a minute remaining. Nichols finally scored his first takedown, and a whistle was blown for injury time. Nichols conceded the escape and they started in neutral. Nichols shot with 0:38 left and Stephens held on for the remaining seconds not giving up any points. Final score, Stephens 8, Nichols 4.

120 lbs.

The second Aztec Tiger to compete in the finals was Ethan Vigil, last year’s New Mexico bronze medalist at 120 lbs. Vigil was seeded second. His challenger was Jiovani Hernandez of Katy Paetow. Hernandez, the 6A #10 ranked wrestler was the fourth seed.

Hernandez path to the finals was highlighted by a decision of top seed and 5A #10 (126 lbs.) Nicholas Bellino. Vigil also had a big decision over 6A #9 Ryu Calderon.

In the final match, Hernandez tried a shot but was shrugged aside by Vigil for a takedown. Vigil used a half to turn Hernandez and scored the fall seconds after the takedown. Gold for Vigil, and the only championship for the Aztec Tigers.

126 lbs.

The final match of 126 lbs. pitted undefeated first seed Collin Tingley of Cy Woods against James Woods, the NM 4A bronze medalist from last season. Moore impressed in the early rounds with convincing victories over Mason Joe of Austin Bowie and Jeremiah Garcia of San Antonio Johnson.

Tingley won Tech Falls over his four opponents leading to the match with Moore.

Tingley built a 6-2 lead with a takedown in each of the first two periods. Entering the third period it was Moore’s choice of position; he chose bottom, but Tingley conceded an escape with an optional start. Now it is 6-3.  Tingley immediately got into Moore’s legs , but couldn’t capitalize. They scrambled to the edge of the mat and Tingley was called for a stall twice, giving Moore another point, 6-4.

After a few moments of injury time for Tingley, the ref restarted the match with Moore choosing to go on bottom because it was Tingley’s second use of injury time. Moore scored his fourth escape of the match, but was not able to score any other points. Championship to Tingley.

132 lbs.

Chance Berry the 6A #8 sophomore of Cy Fair took his 4th seed to the finals for a shot at 8th seed Caleb Davis of Prosper Rock Hill. Davis upset the top seeded 6A #5 Cody Welch and 6A #18 Joshua Kemp.

Berry was able to dismantle Davis with six takedowns over two-and-a-quarter periods for an 18-3 tech fall that was recorded at 4:35.

138 lbs.

In another battle of undefeated wrestlers, Aiden Baker the top seed and 5A #2 wrestler from Mission Sharyland stepped in to face 4th seed Enrique Olivares the 5A #2 144 pounder from Rosenberg Terry.

Olivares defeated the 2025 NM state 4A 126 lb. champ, Ian Vigil, in the semis by a score of 4-1.

Baker defeated #18 ranked Amori Smith in the quarterfinals, and #10 ranked Ali Salem in the semifinals.

This was a nail-biter the entire way, with no scoring in the first two periods, although a quick scramble could have led to three points for Olivares, it was not called by the official. In the third period, Baker started on bottom and escaped in the first five seconds. After some more moving around on their feet, another scramble on the edge of the mat resulted in an Olivares takedown. He quickly released Baker. The only point earned for the rest of the match was the obligatory stalling penalty, which only tightened the final score to a 3-2 victory for Olivares.

144 lbs.

Pablo Aguilar, the 6A # 8 ranked wrestler at 150 lbs. made the move to 144 for the tournament. He received the first seed due to qualifying for state last year and his undefeated record. Aguilar had four bonus point wins before decisioning 6A #4 Vincent Allen to qualify for the finals His opponent, Sebastian Santibanez, the 6A #7 150 pounder of Bridgeland was the second seed, and finished 8th in this tourney last year.

The first period ended scoreless. In the second period, Aguilar started on the bottom. He was awarded an escape when Santibanez released him. Then Aguilar took him down. Santibanez escaped and the pair spent another minute on their feet.

In the third period, with Aguilar leading 4-1, Santibanez chose bottom and quickly got an escape. Santibanez shot for a single and the pair spent a lot of time with not much done before a stalemate was called. Santibanez shot again, but with his head down and on his stomach, he could not advance further. Aguilar got a takedown with 0:13 remaining, let Santibanez go with seconds remaining and avoided being taken down as time wound down. Aguilar wins 7-4.

150 lbs.

The final match of the 150 lb. weight class featured the 3rd seed Micah McCaskill of San Antonio Churchill. Micah is ranked #10 in 6A, and has an undefeated record. From the few times I’ve seen him wrestle this year, if you want any chance of defeating him, you have to wrestle all-out for six minutes. His opponent was Cruz Morales, the 5A #4 ranked wrestler. Cruz held the fourth seed in this tournament, and represented New Braunfels Long Creek HS, which is only in their second year of operations.

Morales’ big win of the tournament was in the semifinal round, where he not only had 4 takedowns in the first period, but after the final takedown, he scored a pin over the New Mexico Aztec HS Tiger, Delano Black. Black had the first seed and won the 4A 4th place medal at the NM state championships last year. Things didn’t get any easier from there when he stepped in to face McCaskill.

Morales held his own against McCaskill for all three periods, only giving up a second period escape, and that was intentional during an optional start. But Morales could not take McCaskill down. Morales could also not overcome McCaskill’s smothering ride, not even to get an escape. The final score ended up as a 1-0 McCaskill victory.

157 lbs.

In a battle of undefeated wrestlers, the #1 seed Bryce Palmer of Smithson Valley, who is also ranked 5A #1. Palmer is also a returning CFISD champ, winning the 150 lb. class last season.

The challenger was second seed Tristan Forsman, ranked as the 6A #4 wrestler from Clear Lake. Forsman decisioned 6A #12 Jayden Cardona and pinned 6A #19 Alken Maxutov. Palmer Majored 6A #9 Kaleb Smith and decisioned 5A #8 Marcus Perales for the right to square off in the circle.

Palmer put on an exhibition, earning a major decision, 13-2, hitting two takedowns in the first period, followed up by two more in the second period. The third period was highlighted by a smothering two-minute Palmer ride-out of Forsman. Palmer was definitely the better  wrestler in this match; faster, stronger, and more confident. Forsman did not wrestle like an undefeated wrestler with an earned chip on his shoulder.

165 lbs.

Breyden Jefferies-Arndt, the fourth seed and 6A #7 from Bridgeland met Keith Remington, the second seed and 6A #3 ranked from League City Clear Creek in the finals. Jefferies-Arndt beat the Aztec, NM number one seed in the semis, as well as 6A #16 ranked Khaled Saffarini of Seven Lakes on his way to face Remington. Remington had four bonus point wins on his path to the last match; two of them against 6A #17 ranked Henson, and 6A #5 ranked Harden. I believe the two have wrestled each other before, with Remington up 2-1 in their matchups.

Remington scored his first takedown after a minute of the first period, when Jefferies gave up on his single and Remington circled around for his points. In the second period Remington scored a reversal before the end of the first minute by slipping out the backdoor of a leg ride, and rode Jefferies out for the rest of the period. Remington leads 5-0.

Jefferies chose neutral in the third period. Remington gets a takedown with a single and spin around. He cuts Jefferies loose for an escape, then Jefferies quickly shoots a single, but gets caught with his head down and Remington spins again for a takedown. Remington would ride Jefferies out for the last minute and win his first CFISD gold medal with a major decision of 11-1.

175 lbs.

Ethan Frost, the 6A #9 ranked Austin Bowie Bulldog had a tremendous run to the finals, upsetting 6A #14 175 pounder Declan Kelts, 6A #7 Luke Podowski, and 5A #8 Preston Kepler, scoring in double digits against all three of them. Unfortunately, his final opponent was Jared Remington, the 2025 157 lb. state runner-up and returning 2025 CFISD 157 lb. champ. Remington is currently the undefeated, #1 ranked wrestler at the weight.

Remington was able to get around Frost, and drop to the mat for a takedown. He then  worked a near cradle and pulled Frost over for the pin at 1:51. His record now stands at 156-7 for his high school career.

190 lbs.

Ten of the top 190-pound ranked wrestlers took part in this bracket. Two others moved down to 175 lbs. The cream of the crop rose to the top, as 6A #2 Pasquale Maurici of Austin Westlake and 6a #3 Sean Perez of Humble brought their undefeated records into the final match. Last season Perez finished with a UIL State bronze medal at 175 lbs. while Maurici also earned bronze but at 190 lbs.

With three-fourths of the first period gone by, Maurici was able to get a hold of Perez’ left ankle at the edge of the mat. He pulled a hopping Perez to the middle of the mat, and was able to trip Perez down for three, knocking over an official standing between mats in the process.  On restart, Maurici was able to throw in a leg-ride, but Perez was able to rise to a tripod and Maurici lost control, giving Perez a reversal right before the whistle.

Trailing 3-2, Perez deferred and Maurici chose bottom. The Westlake Chaparral escaped in the first ten seconds after first trying a switch. Perez got a quick ankle pick for three and Maurici stood and was released. Maurici shot and got in deep, and almost caught a reverse cradle, but Perez worked his way out of the hold, faced Maurici, and spun around for another takedown. Perez kept control for the rest of the period and they went into the third period with Perez leading 8-5.

Perez chose neutral to begin the third. Maurici wanted to tie up, but Perez used his opponent’s motion and quickly shot and caught Maurici’s ankle again, bringing him to the ground for three more. This time the reverse cradle was there and Perez stuck Maurici to the mat for the match-ending fall at 4:39.

215 lbs.

Zayde Facchetti, the #11 ranked product of Humble Kingwood tore through his part of the bracket with quality bonus point wins over 6A #7 Kiran Baichu, #6 Aidan Mayne, and #10 Alexander Escobar.

Awaiting Facchetti in the final round was Roman Nino, the 5A #1 ranked undefeated wrestler from Corpus Christi Carroll. Nino finished the 2025 5A state championship with a silver medal and a 55-3 record.  These two had wrestled each other previously in the finals of the Cy Ridge Classic back in November. Nino won that match with a decision of 7-3, when he cemented his win with a five-point third period.

In this match, Facchetti got into Nino’s legs three times without scoring a takedown. Nino started his lead with a late first period takedown off of his first shot, and followed it with a quick nearfall-2. Facchetti stayed in the top position for half of the second period before Nino escaped. The period would end with both in the neutral position, and Nino holding a 6-0 lead.

Facchetti could only muster an escape in the third period, and Nino won a very workmanlike 9-1 victory. Key to Nino’s victory was his ability to successfully defend Facchetti’s shots, both double and singles. Nino adds a gold medal to the silver he won in 2025 at 190 lbs.

285 lbs.

Last up for the day were the two highest 6A ranked heavyweights in the state, #1 Ke’Shawn Jones from League City Clear Creek and #2 Grant Bahnsen.  Both wrestlers  entered the tournament undefeated, with Jones at 4-0 and Bahnsen at 26-0. Another interesting sidenote is that Jones defeated Bahnsen three times last season. The last two coming in the District 12-6A semifinals, and the Region 3-6A semifinals.

Bahnsen gets the top seed here due to his State 3rd place finish, while Jones finished 6th.

The first period went as most envision a high school heavyweight match to go, with both wrestlers on their feet, working on leverage tie-ups, with neither close to a takedown, but Bahnsen forcing a stall warning on Jones.

Bahnsen chooses bottom to start the second period, and scores an escape as Jones selects an optional start. Bahnsen gets warned for stalling as he backs up from an attempted takedown by Jones.  Jones tries again but doesn’t get in deep enough. Bahnsen gets Jones’ left leg up and trips him down for a takedown at the edge of the mat, but can’t proceed as the whistle is blown to protect the wrestlers from two others who come flying in from another mat. Jones seems to have tweaked his right ankle and injury time starts. The match restarts and Jones secures an escape. Both wrestlers grab onto a throw hold; Bahnsen with a double underhook, and Jones with a double overhook. Bahnsen prevails, but they both end up out-of-bounds. Bahnsen gets Jones in another bearhug, this time back-tripping Jones, but Jones recovers quickly to avoid a takedown. Jones shoots for a takedown, but Bahnsen spins behind for a takedown. Its pretty much over after that. Bahnsen adds a point as another stall is called on Jones, and the final score is 8-2 in Bahnsen’s favor.

I’m not quite sure if Jones is fully in “wrestling shape” yet, that will be seen when these two get to Districts and Regions.
