As the Allen Texas Outlaw Tournament was rolling along with some great battles on the mat, some of us including myself had to take a break to watch Bo Nickal an Allen Alumi and Texas Great, wrestle the #1 ranked wrestler in the Country, Coaches on break from other teams were even excited to see the match, including a Garden City Kansas Coach, it was great . It will be exciting to see where Bo goes from here, there lots of NCAA Champion talk. I know its to soon for all that, but for all of us who wrestle every match with Bo Nickal we feel were ready, haha. knowing Bo and his humbleness, its one match at a time and keep learning to get better. below are pieces from different wrestling articles. In a tournament where Oklahoma State’s Alex Dieringer and Cornell’s Gabe Dean each claimed their third Scuffle titles, Cornell senior Nahshon Garrett rolled through his bracket, and a few other worthy performances garnered plenty of attention it was redshirt-freshman Nickal who earned Outstanding Wrestler honors.
Nickal (17-0), from Allen, Texas, won perhaps the toughest bracket, a bracket where the top two seeds wrestled for fifth and sixth. Nickal beat North Carolina’s Ethan Ramos in the final after beating Cornell’s Brian Realbuto in the semifinals, 14-7.
“I just wrestle as hard as I can every match,” Nickal said. “I am grateful for the coaches that voted for me in a tournament like this.
“It’s awesome to be a part of this program right now. Everybody works really hard and it’s fun to be a part of it. We really work on putting people on their backs, chain wrestling going from feet to back
The semifinal round earlier in the day included plenty of fireworks.
After dodging OSU’s Chandler Rogers in the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Realbuto could not stop Nickal in the match of the tournament. High-level scrambles filled the first period, but Nickal eventually took control and won 14-7 to move to the final. Four-point near falls certainly make the Texan happy.
“That is something you learn at an early age, something we work on constantly,” Nickell said. “With the new 4-point call, it can give you big points in a hurry.”
Red-shirt freshman Bo Nickal (Allen, Texas), ranked No. 5 at 174, rolled through a crowded field to win his first Southern Scuffle title. Nickal opened up his day with a 4-3 win over No. 11 Michael Ottinger of Central Michigan in the quarterfinals. Nickal then gave notice to the nation with one of the tournament’s most dominant performances. Nickal downed previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Brian Realbuto of Cornell 14-7, tallying 2:04 riding time in the process.
The thrilling victory moved Nickal into the finals where he met North Carolina’s Ethan Ramos. Nickal wasted no time in taking a 2-0 lead, moving through a takedown and then breaking Ramos down on the mat. He added one more takedown in the first period and led 4-2 with 1:18 in riding time after one period. Nickal escaped to a 5-2 lead to start the second period and then took Ramos down one more time to lead 7-3 with 1:55 in time after two. Ramos escaped to start the final period but Nickal countered a shot to extend his lead to 9-4 with another takedown. Nickal gave up one takedown at the :10 mark but with an escape and 2:27 in riding time, posted the dominant 11-7 win. Nickal won the 174-pound title with a 6-0 record, including two tech falls and a major. Nickal was named the 2016 Southern Scuffle Most Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts.
