This article takes a look at the CFISD Girls tournament results.

Some interesting facts:

  • A total of 88 teams and 633 wrestlers were reflected in the tournament results.
  • There were six, #1 ranked wrestlers in the finals, and two of them were in one weight class
  • Eight top seeds won the championship for their weight bracket.
  • 23 Undefeated wrestlers entered the tournament. Only 6 remained undefeated when the dust settled at the end of the tournament.
  • The Most Outstanding Wrestler’s only defeat this season came at the hands of a returning Nebraska state champion at the KC Stampede. She also won the MOW at the Texas Women’s Classic, the most difficult Texas regular season tournament for the ladies. In the finals of this tournament, she pinned the 6A #1 ranked wrestler in 0:44.

100 lbs.

Katelynn Dockery, the top seed from Bryan HS, entered the tournament as the highest ranked 6A wrestler with a 14-1 record. Dockery steamrolled her way through the bracket with a total of five pins out of five matches with her first four matches ending in first period pins. She racked up wins against the following ranked wrestlers 5A #11 Sophia Cooley, 6A #7Apolonia Nuncio, 6A #5 Kaelani Palmer, and 5A #15 undefeated Carly Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was no pushover as she was leading 11-2 going into the third period (including two 4-point nearfalls) when Dockery earned her first offensive points of the match with an upper body takedown that brought Rodriguez to her back. The pin was called 8 seconds later.

Dockery definitely put herself in the running for MOW.

Kaelani Palmer of Richmond Foster pinned Elisa Cano of Klein Oak for 3rd place.

Top seeded Ava Aragon, the # 1 5A wrestler from McAllen, and 5th place state medalist last season, cruised through the top side of the bracket, defeating 6A #6 Isabella Allen and 6A #17 Ashley Nataren on her way. Her opponent in the title match was Brynlee Mooney the 9th grader from The Woodlands HS. Mooney came out of the 14th seed defeating 6A #10 Cordelia Martinez, 6A #7 Kiana Riggenbach, and 6A #15 Minha Castillo. Both Riggenbach and Castillo were state qualifiers last year.

Mooney left no doubt that she has arrived on the high school scene with her work in this year’s tournament. After winning three close decisions (7-6, 6-4,and 7-6) over three ranked wrestlers, she let it fly in the finals against Aragon.

Mooney started with a collar tie and ankle pick which gave her the first takedown. She proceeded to get her leg in and performed a NF-3 guillotine. On restart, she got the leg in again, and this time it resulted in a banana split which gave her a NF-4. I’ve got to tell you, it’s so nice to see a wrestler working on pinning combinations with their leg ride instead of just watching the clock wind down. 10-0 going into the second period.

In this second, Mooney was called for two violations, a clasp and a full nelson. Mooney recovered to earn a NF-2 with an armbar/tilt, to go into the third period leading 12-2.

Aragon was on top for the third period, but could not get anything going at all, she gave up a penalty point because of a full nelson, and after some blood time, Mooney refused to be turned, and became the CFISD 2026 105 lb. champion with a convincing 13-2 major decision. That’s a pretty good accomplishment for your first high school tournament title.

Cordelia Martinez of San Antonio Madison pinned Isabella Allen of Conroe Grand Oaks for third place.

Both finalists were wrestlers who dropped down a weight from 115 lbs. to compete in the tournament. Top seed Eva Horton of Richmond George Ranch brought her 6A #7 ranking into the finals after defeating 5A #15 Mya Maronen and 6A #4 Kamyrn Quinn.

Analia Urias of Cibolo Steele, the 6A #10 ranked 115 pounder, worked her way through the bottom of the bracket from her 7th seed. She defeated the second seed/ #17 ranked Valeria Medrano, and 6A #8 ranked Gianna Zavala for the right to take on the top seed Grant in the finals.

Urias started the scoring deep into the first period with a single-leg takedown, which Horton was able to escape from. They started in neutral in the second period, and spent three-fourths of the period sparring and working to set something up. While pushing forward, Urias executed an awesome ankle pick to add another three points to her score. Horton escaped again before the end of the period.

Horton needed points, so she chose top, which she had not been in all match, hoping on turning Urias over for back points and a possible fall. Unfortunately, that would not happen today, as Urias was an immovable force, refusing to submit anything Horton attempted. Of course, this led to three stall calls and two points, but that did not change the outcome. Urias wins 6-4.

Valeria Medrano of Edinburgh defeated Giana Zavala of Langham Creek 6-1 for the bronze medal.

All four of the bracket’s top seeds made it to the semifinals: first seed Ava Milliner of Killeen Chaparral, second seed Stephanie Lopez of Katy Mayde Creek, third Alia Baker of Klein Cain, and number four Avian Caceres of Langham Creek.

Milliner brought in a 5A #7 ranking in 120 lbs., as well as a 19-0 record, not to mention she was the 2024 5A State champ at 126 lbs. Lopez was ranked 2nd at 115, having both of her two losses come to #1 Nevada Daniels. Caceres had a ranking of #5 at 120, and Baker was ranked 5th at 115.

In the semifinals, Caceres decisioned Milliner 6-2, on the strength of two takedowns. Lopez and Baker’s match went into overtime, and Lopez came out on top 10-3 with a takedown and 4-point NF.

In their title match, all of the important points were scored in the first period. Lopez scored a takedown and a 4-point nearfall on the edge of the mat, and took that 7-0 lead into the second period.

Caceres chose down, but could only accumulate two points via three stalling calls on Lopez, who was content to ride her out the entire period.

Lopez chose bottom for the third and escaped in the first 0:05. Caceres had two shots the rest of the way, and Lopez did not let her get anywhere close to getting her legs. Gold to Lopez with an 8-2 decision.

Ava Milliner had a WBF over Isabella Arevalos of Corpus Christi King for 3rd place.

Only one of the undefeated wrestlers entering this finals match would leave the mat undefeated. Top seed Genevieve Bellino of Corpus Christi Carroll, who also holds the 5A #1 ranking, walked onto the mat with a 34-0 record. Her opponent from Katy Paetow, Aylin Pagan was the second seed and was #5 ranked at 125 lbs. in 6A.

Pagan defeated 3rd seed Emily Melhem (6A #17) and Mika Morton (6A #13 @ 125 lbs.) to reach the finals.

Bellino pinned 6A #20 (115) ranked Madelia Campbell and 6A #18 Sadie Smith in the quarters and semis to get to the title bout.

The first period ended scoreless, with Bellino applying most of the pressure, but with no takedowns attempted. At one point, Pagan had a great shrug, but didn’t pounce after Bellino went by.

They started in neutral again for the second period. This time, Bellino, who definitely likes to work in close, was able to force Pagan into an upper body tie-up. Bellino used that to get Pagan  on her back at the edge of the mat, and secured the pin sixteen seconds later at 3:03.

Emily Melhem of Katy Taylor won a 17-8 major decision over Mika Morton for third place.

The first seed and 5A 32 Olivia Ontiveros of El Paso Bel Air met the number three seed and 6A #9 Sophia Tamayo of Clear Lake in the finals. Tamayo earned her spot in the finals with a semifinal pin of second seed and 6A #2 Cora Hayes.

Tamayo and Ontiveros started  their match and it wasn’t until the end of the first period that Tamayo landed a throw and had Ontivero on the verge of breaking the 90degree angle for a nearfall when the period ended. Ontiveros did not get up. Injury time started the training crew came over, and shortly thereafter after they were ready to go, the El Paso Bel Air coach had a conference with the official, and the official spoke with the other official then spoke with the coach again, then both officials spoke with the coach. It was a total of 4:26 before the match was resumed; with an added point to Tamayo’s score which was explained on Trackwrestling’s period-by-period score as coach’ misconduct. I did not see an angry exchange on my recording, but words must have been said. 4-0 Tamayo, going into the second.

Tamayo deferred and Ontiveros chose bottom. Ontiveros stood twice, and she was brought back to the mat twice. She sat out twice, and on the second one she was pulled back for a quick NF-2. Tamayo was called for stalling, but it could have been called on both wrestlers as Ontiveros was not moving from her stomach either. 6-0 in Tamayo’s favor.

Before the period started, the referee’s realized a scoring table mistake, and returned the score to 5-0 Tamayo. The wrestler does not get a penalty point on a Coach misconduct call; a point is removed from the team score.

Now that it was settled, Tamayo chose top. This time when Ontiveros stood, she was able to score an escape in the first minute. A revitalized Ontiveros bullied Tamayo down and worked her over with a power half, but she was unable to turn her for back points. Tamayo wins a 5-4 decision.

Cora Hayes of Southlake Carroll won a 7-1 decision over Kayla Dunn of Cy Park for the bronze medal.

In the December 23rd WrestlingTX rankings Elvia Davila of Mission Sharyland was ranked as the 5A #5 at 135 lbs. and Lianna Benitez of San Antonio Churchill was ranked #7. Benitez was given the top seed because of her 22-0 record and her 6th  place at the state championships last year at 126 lbs. Davila also came in with an undefeated record, but had the third seed. There were thirteen other ranked wrestlers in this bracket, including one from New Mexico.

In the first period there was a lot of maneuvering to get good position and  leverage. Davila shot once, but it was unsuccessful. Benitez was  persistent in her work to get an upper body hold. She finally got it, and back-tripped Davila to the mat, securing the pin seconds later. This pin was her fifth of the tournament, and fourth in the first period. Only 1 escape point was scored against her in all five matches. A great tournament for her.

Cheyenne Yellow of Aztec won third by forfeit.

135 lbs.

The top two seeds, Tayla Skelley of Prosper and Zoey Gomez of Lamar Fulshear faced-off for the 135 lb. title. Skelley ranked #3 and Gomez #9; both in 6A. Both qualified for the state tournament last season, with Skelley winning 6th in 132 lbs.

Skelley’s only two losses this year have come at the hands of 5A #1 Dalilah Coyle and 6A #2 Daniela Hernandez.

This match was a quick one. Skelley defended a shot and scored three with a spin behind. She turned Gomez over with an arm bar and wrist, which turned into a double arm bar; the pin was called at 1:32.  Skelley completed the tournament with three falls and two tech falls.

Josie Clarke of Klein Oak won third place with a hard-fought 5-2 decision over a district opponent, Amira Grey of Klein.

140 lbs.

Comal Pieper’s Gillian Eckert, the 5A #4 at 140 lbs. met Chelbi Lott of Rosenberg Terry, who was ranked #9 at 5A 155 lbs. but has wrestled at 145 since November. Lott was seeded second, as both wrestlers qualified for the state tournament last year.

Both girls worked for the best upper body positioning for a throw, which Eckert eventually got. Trailing by three, Lott chose neutral. Again, they both tied up around the shoulders, Eckert with an underhook and Lott with an overhook, looking for a throw. Eckert got behind Lott when she missed a fireman’s carry, and brought her down for another takedown. Eckert used an armbar and wrist to turn Lott over, and was rewarded with a four-point nearfall. Lott surprisingly got out and almost cross-faced Eckert to the mat, but Eckert recovered and put Lott on her back again. The referee slapped the mat at 3:32.

Eckert’s record improves to 23-0.

Britany Patino of Prosper won a 7-2 decision over Sophia Payrovi for third place.

In another finals with the two top seeds, with both placing at the state tournament last season, we have 6A #1 Christina Decker, 22-0, who finished 5th at 145 lbs. last year, and 6A #7 Zoe Sonnier of Bryan, finished 6th at 138 lbs. Decker advanced to the finals with four pins.

With a lot of circling and hand-fighting during the first minute, Decker finally shot, and turned a single into a double for the takedown. Sonnier chose top, down 3-0.

Decker was able to stand, arch back to create space between her waist and Sonnier’s grip, and turn for her escape. Sonnier was able to score her first points with a strong takedown. But Decker was able to stand and escape again.

5-3 in Decker’s favor starting the third period and she chooses neutral. Sonnier is working more aggressively on her feet, and as the ref signals for a Decker stall, Sonnier shoots, but gets balled up under Decker’s torso. Decker is able to get around Sonnier for a takedown, keeping her feet inside the circle, before they both go out. Decker remains on top for the remaining 1:14 for an 8-3 decision and the title.

Maria Caires of Cy Ranch came through with a 13-4 MD over her district opponent Alyssa Navarro of Cy Springs.

Next up was a 5A #1 versus a 6A #1. The 5A #1 was not just any run of the mill top seed having a good year. It was Cydney Davis of El Paso Bel Air. The same Cydney Davis who is a returning 2X state champ at 152 lbs. Since Davis’ 3rd place finish at the 2023 State Championship, she has amassed a 100-1 UIL record, and that one loss last year was to a 2x Hawaii/1x NM state champ. When you add her freshman year, her record is 120-4. And now her record is 151-4. That’s putting her in a legendary stratosphere.

Davis stepped onto the mat to wrestle 6A #1 Claire Guydon of The Woodlands HS, who was seeded second. Davis wasted no time as she picked Guydon’s ankle, turned it into a single and got 3 points in twenty seconds. Davis turned Guydon with an armbar/wrist and got her fourth pin of the tournament, her first CFISD title, and possibly the tournament MOW.

Klein Collins’ Abigail Taylor won four matches in the consolation bracket to pull out third place. Her last win was a first period pin over Layla Batista of Rosenberg Terry.

Number one seed and 6A ranked #1 Aisha Williams-Bautista entered the tournament with a 35-1 season record, but was only given a ninth seed because seven of the other ladies seeded ahead of her qualified for the state tournament last year, and the one that didn’t qualify, had an undefeated record. Even though the Flower Mound wrestler’s only loss came at the Kansas City Stampede to a state champion from Nebraska who placed 2nd and 3rd her other years. But that didn’t matter to her, she had 4 first period pins on her way to the title match, with no points scored against her.

In the finals she wrestled Allyson Alaniz of Smithson Valley. Seeded third, Alaniz entered the tournament ranked #7 in 5A, and had an undefeated record of 15-0. She is also a 2x state tournament qualifier.

This match would be all Williams Bautista, but you couldn’t tell by the first 0:35. Alaniz caught Williams Bautista in a headlock and teetered on the possibility of getting her on her back. But the Flower Mound wrestler fought through it, slipped her head out, and slid around the back for 3. While attempting to turn Alaniz over, Williams Bautista was called for locked hands behind the head for a penalty point for Alaniz.  Williams Bautista took control of both of Alaniz’ elbows and turned her over. From my perspective of watching the move 3-4 times, the ref took too long to move to the other side of the mat to call the pin, but she did get 4 points, and the match went into the second period with a 7-1 lead for Williams Bautista.

Alaniz chose neutral. She shot for a double, but Williams Bautista just pushed through her and put Alaniz on her back for 3 and 4 more. 14-1.

At restart, Williams Bautista broke Alaniz down, used a half and wrist and turned her over. The match was stopped when a 4-point nearfall was earned, making it a Tech Fall 18-1 victory for the title.

The third-place medal was won by a second period pin by Gabriell Moore over Angelina Patterson of Cy Ranch, another match with district opponents. Moore won four matches by pin in the championship bracket before falling to the eventual champion.

The top seed of this bracket was Harper McClain, the freshman from Aztec New Mexico, who won a state championship as an 8th grader. Undefeated 4th seed, Wema Laktari of Lewisville Flower Mound had a first period pin of McClain in the semifinals and a pin of the top ranked Jaida Kuntz in the quarterfinals to earn a title shot against the 2nd seed Lyric Larry of New Braunfels. Larry had a 2nd period pin of third seed, Gabriela Knight of Smithson Valley.

Laktari used a double leg takedown to get Larry down in 0:40. With a heavy ride, Laktari held onto a wrist and sunk an armbar to turn her opponent over for the fall at 1:14. Laktari remains undefeated at 34-0.

It took four wins for Jaida Kuntz of Richmond Foster to claim the bronze medal , with her final win coming over Harper McClain of Aztec.

235 lbs.

Saniah Ebron of Killeen Harker Heights, a 2X state qualifier and 2025 5th place medalist used her second seed to reach the finals with 4 wins by fall. Ebron was ranked 6A #4, and entered the tournament at 18-1.

Ebron’s opponent was Alyciana Rogers of Liberty Hill. Rogers is the 5A #1 ranked wrestler and top seed of this bracket. She comes in with a 16-1 record.

Ebron was on her knees when she went in for a shot, and Rogers was able to spin around for 3. Rogers had Ebron turned a couple of times, but Ebron worked through them, but the third time was the charm for Rogers as she used an arm bar to turn and then covered for the pin.

Rogers successfully defended her 2025 CFISD 235 lb. championship.

Kate Oguntoyin of Houston Bellaire claimed third with 4 wins in the consolations and a final 2-1 victory over Zakhia Burke of Prosper Rock Hill.
