Texas was well represented on the international stage at the 2026 U17 World Championships, as two local athletes returned home with world medals while competing for different nations.
Landri Von Gonten of College Park High School captured a historic silver medal representing the United States, while Aisha Williams Bautista of Flower Mound earned a world medal competing for Panama.
Also competing at the championships was Marisa Iturrino of Carrollton Creekview High School, who represented Puerto Rico. Iturrino advanced into the championship bracket before falling to Von Gonten in the Round of 16. Because Von Gonten reached the championship finals, Iturrino was pulled back into the repechage, giving her another opportunity to compete for a bronze medal. Although she ultimately fell short of the podium, her performance capped an impressive international showing.
Von Gonten’s silver-medal finish is a landmark achievement for both Texas and USA Wrestling. She becomes only the second Texas female wrestler to earn a U17 World Championship medal while representing the United States, joining Jasmine Robinson, who won bronze in 2023.
Her performance also set a new standard for Texas wrestling history. Since 2000, only four Texas female wrestlers have represented Team USA at the U17 World Championships: Alex Liles (2015, 2017), Erin Mance (2016), Jasmine Robinson (2022, 2023), and Landri Von Gonten (2026). Among that distinguished group, Von Gonten is the first Texan to advance to a U17 World Championship final.
The success of Von Gonten and Williams Bautista highlights the continued growth of girls wrestling in Texas, with Texas once again demonstrating its ability to develop athletes capable of competing—and succeeding—on the world’s biggest stages.
