Klein Oak Panthers Maul Friendswood Clear Brook Wolverines on Senior Night

On Wednesday night the Friendswood Clear Brook Wolverines visited the Klein Oak Panther on the night that they celebrated their senior class wrestlers. It was a big deal, as the Panthers have 24 seniors on this year’s squad. Ten on the Girls’ team and fourteen on the Boys’ team.

We all know that a strong wrestling team consists of more than just the front-line wrestlers. There are so many wrestlers that keep pushing each other at every practice, working at that wrestle-off to get that Varsity or JV slot for the next match, making their team the strongest it can be on the mat for every contest. For that, I would like to mention all of the seniors on the Klein Oak team. I hope I did not leave anyone out.

The Panthers girls’ team consists of five ranked senior wrestlers: Chloe Hanes #9 at 106, Pam Carlos Maldonado #6 at 132, Malaina Jones #2 at 145, Cassidy Castro #12 at 165, and Rylee Ferranti #1 at 185. Other senior girls include Skyler Stafford, Saraya Scott, Natalia Alarcon Campos, and Adelia Zafra.

The boys have one ranked wrestler in their senior class: Carter Canizaro, #7 at 150. Other seniors celebrated tonight were Nathaniel Garcia, Armando Recendez Garrido, Niccolo Rodriguez, Landen Perilman, Austen Bailey, Hudson Holladay, Xander Usher, Sebastian Aular, Nathaniel Angel, Fabien Miller, Nicholas Mercurio, J.P Miller, and Dennis Irabor.

My hat is off to all of you. I hope those wrestlers in the grades below understand and appreciate how much it takes to be a wrestler through your senior year, and it drives them to work even harder to do the same.

In a very abbreviated girl’s dual match, there were only two contested matches. The first was with Chloe Hanes (24-9) at 100 lbs. vs. Sehar Siddiqui (3-8). Hanes shot and completed three takedowns while giving Siddiqui two escapes. After the third takedown, Hanes used a wrist and a half to turn her over to get the pin at 1:20.

The 126 lb. match had Savannah Quintanilla (10-14) of Klein Oak and Keirah Villarreal of Clear Brook.    Villarreal defended a shot by Quintanilla and spun around for the takedown. A hand clasp gave Quintanilla a penalty point. Quintanilla was given another clasp point several seconds later.  Taking a 3-2 lead into the second period, Villarreal started on top and broke Quintanilla from her base, was able to sink a half and turn Quintanilla over for the fall at 2:28.

The Klein Oak Panthers cleared the rest of the match-ups with forfeits, ending up with a 54-6 win.

The boys’ matches were next. At 106 lbs. Nicholas Lopez of Clear Brook received a forfeit.

Hudson Taylor (7-11) of Klein Oak and Aidan Carpenter (NR) of Clear Brook were up next at 113 lbs. Taylor was able to complete a shrug (as we would call it in the 70’s) and slip in a half for the pin at 0:34.

Next up at 126 lbs. was Armando Recendez Garrido for KO against Corithian Coleman of FCB. After Coleman’s first takedown, the pair traded escapes and takedowns for a 7-4 Coleman lead going into the third period. With Coleman on bottom, he reversed, then Recendez reversed and was able to get a quick NF-2 before Coleman reversed again, sinking a half in the process, and gaining the fall at 3:58.

Nathaniel Garcia of the home team and Chance Winger of Clear Brook stepped up next at 132 lbs. Garcia got the first takedown, a single, and then caught Coach Jones’ eye and cut Winger loose; he repeated this, two more times with a double, before catching a half and pinning Winger at 0:58

KO’s Niccolo Rodriguez took just a few seconds more in putting Clear Brook’s Everrett Phillips away at 138 lbs. Rodriguez didn’t need to see his coach’s eye after he got a single leg takedown. He let Phillips up and shot a double, picked him up and put a reverse half in as he was putting him down, then switched the half to the near side on the mat. The ref slapped the mat at 1:06.

Landen Perilman also worked on his takedowns in the first period of the 144 lb. match with Isaiah Gray of Clear Brook. The first was with a single and go-behind of the opposite leg, and the second was also a single.  Perilman caught an arm and a cross-body leg scissor to pin Gray at 1:21.

At 150 lbs., 6A #7 Carter Canizaro (17-1) of Klein Oak, took on challenger Joel Sosa of Clear Brook. Canizaro got a quick, high, single for a takedown. After an out-of-bounds restart, he signaled for an optional start, and he let Sosa loose. He picked up another takedown when he gave up on the upper body and made a fast move to a single. He got Sosa on his back, but with a great display of a back bridge, Sosa prevented a pin in the first period. With a 10-1 lead, Canizaro chose bottom, and stood and slipped under Sosa’s arm for a reversal, then brought him to his back with a nearside cradle for the pin at 2:40.

Klein Oak 36, Clear Brook 12

Klein Oak’s second ranked wrestler, #12 Jayden Cardona at 157 lbs. met Kameron Roland In the span of 0:25, Cardona was able to get two single-leg/back trip takedowns and a pin.

Klein Oak 42, Clear Brook 12

At 165 lbs. Hudson Holladay would add to the Panthers’ lead against Zacqari Cotter. Holladay, moving down to 165 for the first time, picked up Cotter with a double and put him down for a Td-3 before going out of bounds. Cotter escaped from an optional start, and was taken down again. Holladay turned him onto his back and scored the fall at 1:22.

Klein Oak 48, Clear Brook 12

The 175 lb. wrestlers were Austen Bailey of KO, and Karim Roubi of Clear Brook. Bailey scored his takedown in the first ten seconds, but was unable to score again until the second period. Bailey increased his 3-0 lead in the second with two takedowns and two nearfalls, to 14-1. Bailey chose neutral to start the third and scored his fourth takedown to earn a Tech Fall 17-1 victory at 4:32.

Klein Oak 54, Clear Brook 12

Adrien Perez of KO and Vanthawng Sakhong of Clear Brook were up next at 190 lbs. The first period ended up being a takedown drill for Perez as he was able to take his opponent down five times (after hearing his coach call out and motion release) with: a single, a double, a spin around, a single, and a bull rush. With a 15-4 lead, Perez chose neutral, and took Vanthawng down one more time before turning him over for the pin at 2:44.

Klein Oak 60, Clear Brook 12

At 215 lbs., Ethan Toronjo of KO and Cedric Jenkins faced off.  Jenkins would stop the Panthers win streak with a first period takedown and pin of Toronjo (1:10)

The heavyweights concluded the night with the 8th first period pin. Tyrique Turner of Klein Oak and Teodoro Garcia tied up and Turner was able to get two takedowns before turning Garcia and getting the pin at 1:03.
