NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Coach Chris Holzworth felt his Dumas girls wrestling proram was to a point where they could make some noise at the Texas High School Wrestling Coaches Association State Duals.
The Demonettes not only made some noise they ended up winning the state championship Friday night at NYTEX Sports Centre. After a first-round bye in the 16-team field
Dumas hammered Lubbock, 54-15 – a rematch of a Jan. 2 dual that Dumas won 48-18, in its first match. In the semifinals, the Demonette led from the start and pulled away late for a 48-21 win against fourth-seeded Azel. Dumas outscored Azle, 24-3 down the stretch.
In the finals, Dumas handed Richmond’s John and Randolph Foster High School a 54-12 loss – outscoring the foes 48-6 over the final 10 matches.
Sophia West (120 pounds) opened with a pin over Zoe Lopez in 4:46. The Falcons answered with a pin by Madison Canales in 1:15 over Emily Loya in the 126-pound match.
