Last week, after several days of rest and practice after the Cy Fair ISD tournament, and believe me, the coaches needed the rest as much as the wrestlers; The Woodlands High School Highlanders made a visit to wrestle their neighbor to the south, the Klein Collins Tigers. After a few junior varsity matches, the Boys began their dual matches.

106 lbs: Adrian Vela Romero (10-11) of TWHS stepped onto the mat to face Ethan Gonzalez (9-13) of Klein Collins. Vela Romero went in for a left leg single, and ended up grabbing both for a takedown halfway through the first period. His ride got a little too high and Gonzalez was able to roll and catch the Highlanderās arm and head for a reversal, and at the minimum, a nearfall. Twenty seconds later, Gonzalez finished the match with a fall at 1:51. Klein Collins 6, TWHS 0
113 lbs: Next up were two freshmen wrestlers; for the TWHS was Cameron Jones (1-14) against Tyler Mann (13-11) of KCHS. Mann scored the first takedown with a single and spin. After a headgear adjustment, Mann worked a cross-wrist into a cradle, and rocked Jones to his back for a NF-4. Jones kicked out of it and returned to his base. Mann then used a double wrist lock and roll for his second NF-4. At this point, Jonesā head was on the mat and Mann was able to easily sink a half and turn him over for the fall at 1:57. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 0
120 lbs: No match-Double Forfeit
126 lbs: Charlie Hempfling of TWHS received six points for a Forfeit. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 6.
132 lbs: Andrew Huerta (26-1) of TWHS, the 6A #4 ranked wrestler came in to face freshman Lacarie Sayers (V:1-0, JV:5-1) of KCHS. Huerta was a recent champ at the CFISD tournament. As could be expected, Huerta used a takedown and two 4-point nearfalls to an 11-0 lead going into the second period. Starting on the bottom, Huerta stood and turned into his opponent, and was able to grab a leg and bring him to the ground on his back for a R-2 and NF-4 for a Tech Fall, 17-0 victory at 2:25. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 11
138 lbs: Max Mitchell (16-12) of the Highlanders came up next against Jack Nailon (1-13) of the Tigers. Mitchell came out and got a successful double for 3 points. Mitchell used an effective wrist and armbar to turn Naillor and secured the fall at 0:52. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 17
144 lbs: Ioannis Koymarianos (17-10) of TWHS entered to wrestle the Tigersā Vincent Ventresca (2-5). Koymarianos went to work immediately, scoring a double and putting Ventresca on his back on the edge of the mat within fifteen seconds. Unfortunately, he could not get the pin without getting into a better position, and that would force him to leave the mat. After a restart, Ventresca looked to try a Granby, but without any hand control, Koymarianos caught him on his back, and put him away at 1:41. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 23
150 lbs: Harry Landau of the Highlanders picked up six points for the team with a Forfeit. Klein Collins 12, TWHS 29
157 lbs: Joseph Camerino of KCHS picked up a forfeit for the Tigers. Klein Collins 18, TWHS 29
165 lbs: Luke Podowski (20-9) of TWHS stepped in to take on Aaron Montemayor (6-9) of KCHS. Montemayor tried a hip throw, but Podowski was able to stay behind as they went to the mat; Podowski stayed on top for a T-3. Podowski rode out the period on top. Montemayor started the second on top, but looked tired. Podowski half-stood, and felt Montemayorās weight way up high, so he turned and caught a leg, then a half then put him on his back for a quick pin at 2:26. Klein Collins 18, TWHS 35
175 lbs: Holden Hart (24-8) of TWHS and Daniel Chacon (7-10) of KCHS were up next. Hart is the current #11 ranked 6A wrestler. Of his six in-state losses, five are against other currently ranked wrestlers. Chacon got the first shot in, a pretty good single, but it was defended well by Hart, and he turned it into a takedown of his own. Hart got a deep armbar, and was about to turn Chacon, when Chacon turned into it, which allowed Hart to sink the half, and get the pin at 1:07. Klein Collins 18, TWHS 41
190 lbs: Up next were two wrestlers who are no strangers to each other. The Klein Collins captain, Jamarkus Campbell (25-6) and Lee Harrell (32-7). Campbell and Harrell met in the consolations of the CFISD tourney the previous weekend; where Harrell won a MD by a 12-3 score; which included 4 takedowns by Harrell. Earlier in the season, the pair met in the Semis of the Cy Ridge Invite. Campbell won that match in a TB 3-2 decision. Campbell is currently ranked #
Tonightās third meeting between the two would also be a close match. After a good shot early in the period by Harrell, that did not lead to points, the two wrestlers would not threaten the other with a takedown the rest of the period. Campbell chose down, but he would not be there for long as he stood and escaped in the first twelve seconds. Harrell shot a deep single, but could not get full control while on his knees. Harrell shot again, this time a double, but switched to a firemanās carry when he couldnāt turn him. He actually got Campbell to his hip, but didnāt cover fast enough as Campbell quickly righted himself to face Harrell. Harrell tried to keep a hold of that one leg, but with less than 5 seconds left, Campbell was able to get around for the takedown. 4-0 in Campbellās favor going into the third with Harrell on bottom. Harrell stood and escaped within seven seconds. Harrell had another shot in deep but couldnāt come around to hook a leg, and Campbell took advantage and turned it into a takedown. Campbell rode out Harrell for the remainder of the period for a 7-1 decision.
Campbell had 6 points via takedowns, and he never made a shot, he just defended Harrellās shots and took advantage of the fact that his opponent didnāt or couldnāt finish his takedowns in this match.
With three other wrestlers ahead of them from Region 2, these two may see each other again at that post-season tournament, but until then, there is still the Klein Collins Tiger Classic coming up on January 17-18 where their paths may cross again. Klein Collins 21, TWHS 41
215 lbs: Isaiah Longoria picks up a forfeit win for Klein Collins. Klein Collins 27, TWHS 41
285 lbs: Lenny Houser gets his hand raised for a forfeit win for Klein Collins.
Final Boys Score: Klein Collins 33, The Woodlands 41
TWHS vs KCHS Girls
Next up was some limited action between the girlsā teams. Actually, only three weight classes were contested. Iām not sure if it was because of the condition of the athletes after the CFISD tourney, nagging injuries, or worse, but I will report on what took place.
100 lbs: The Woodlands High School Valentina Vitaliano de Mello (23-9), who went 4-2 at the CFISD tournament, faced-off against Rhiane Marshall, a ninth grader who has split her season between JV and Varsity. Valentina scored her first takedown before the first minute elapsed. On my recording, I could hear someone yelling, āHigh C, High C, High Cā. Then she shot a high crotch single leg takedown for 3 points, and then scored a NF-2 at the end of the period. Marshall started on top, but her hip stayed low and Vitaliano was able to hip in and step over for a R-2. Vitaliano stuck the half and walked the head, turning Marshall over for the pin at 2:32. Klein Collins 0, TWHS 6
107 lbs: 6A #3 Danielle Sizelove (29-8) of TWHS and 6A #14 Kamryn Quinn (23-8) were up next. These two stellar wrestlers last met in the consolations of the CFISD tournament where Sizelove won a very close 4-3 decision in the last seconds of the third period.
Quinn was in for two quick shots before being able to get the takedown. She had Sizelove on her back twice but she rolled through both times for no back points. After a restart, Sizelove stood and escaped. After two coachesā conferences, the ref was able to restart the match with 0:34 left, and both girls in the neutral position. Quinn got a deep single and Sizelove went to her hip, gaining another takedown, seconds before the buzzer. Quinn chose neutral. Quinn got in on Sizeloveās legs again, but the two went back and forth looking as if each would gain control, until Sizelove came out on top for the takedown and as Quinn stood, Sizelove drove into her, sunk a half and got a NF-4 as the buzzer went off. Sizelove with the lead, 8-6, and she chose bottom to start the third.
Quinn tried an assortment of moves after the whistle, but didnāt have anything until Sizelove tried to sit out and turn in, then Quinn drove in while holding onto an arm and her head, she almost seemed to be inadvertently applying pressure onto Sizeloveās neck and upper spine. Coach Rayome came onto the mat to stop the match, and her father jumped up from the front row of the bleachers as well. The ref had blown the whistle and signaled a potentially dangerous move.
Sizelove stood up while the trainer came out to evaluate her, and seemed like she wanted to go on, but was advised against it. She eventually took a medical forfeit, as Quinnās hand was raised almost 5 minutes later. The results of the match do not show up in either wrestlerās trackwrestling profile as a win, loss, or medical forfeit.
Iām not quite sure how to show the score for the rest of the match as it wasnāt entered onto trackwrestling, even though hands were raised for both of the Rayome sisters receiving forfeits, as well as Rital Long of KC getting one for KCHS at 132 lbs. That would have made it KCHS 12 and TWHS 18
The next and only other contested match was at 152 lbs. with TWHS Claire Guydon (24-6), the 6A #3 ranked wrestler going up against Lydia Ventresca (9-8). Guydon went straight at it with a double, but both wrestlers went out of bounds. She did the same after the restart , but this time she got her 3 points on the edge of the mat. Guydon cut Ventresca loose and took her down with another double, this time bringing her to her back with a half and a wrist for the fall at 1:02. KCHS 12, TWHS 24
Abigail Taylor, 165 lbs, and Iliana Gomez, 235 lbs, both of KCHS also had their hands raised for receiving forfeits. So, if all of the forfeits would have counted it would have been a 24-24 score. Track wrestling has it as 12-0 in TWHS favor. At this point I donāt think it matters. Itās just good to see that Danielle Sizelove is alright. As we get down to the end of the regular season, there are just a few tournaments the next two weekends before Districts come. I know some wrestlers are getting to that magic number of eight tournaments, so it will be interesting to see which ones they chose to participate in. The Tiger Classic this weekend and the Ridge āInviteā on the 25th are the last that I see in the Houston area before Districts begin during the week of the 27th. Itās been a fast season, but there is so much action left before we meet back at the Berry Center for the State tournament.
