With less than thirty days until the official start of the 2024-25 Texas high school wrestling season, I’d like to present the first of a series of Pre-Season articles highlighting Houston area wrestling teams. What better school to start with than Conroe ISD’s Woodlands College Park; the top team in the Houston area.

Coaches Erik and Lindsey Spjut’s 2023-24 Boys and Girls’ teams received many accolades during the year last season. The Girls finished 2nd at the UIL 6A championships, and the Boys brought home the 3rd place finish at State. None of the Girls were lost to graduation, but the Boys need to replace 157 lb. champion Kolten Oborny and 3rd place 138 lber Kaleb Smith. Oborny has moved on to the University of Missouri Tigers wrestling squad and Smith will bring his experience to Roanoke College.

Returning for the Girls are:

138 lb. UIL Silver medalist and 2023 138 lb. Champion Anna Vogt. Vogt has a 76-2 record over the last two seasons. Vogt most recently competed at the Super 32 Early Entry tournament, which she won. That qualified her for the SOAP Super 32 this past weekend, where she went 2-2 at 132 lbs. It remains to be seen if she will make the move from 138 to 132.

Vanessa De la Cruz, the UIL Silver medalist at 114 lbs., as well as 2nd at Region 2 and District 8-6A, only finishing behind 2-time Champ, Riley Rayome in all three tournaments. Vanessa has a 117-24 record over the last three seasons. Vanessa most recently participated in the SOAP Super 32 and went 5-2 before bowing out.

Violet De la Cruz (35-6), who finished 4th at the UIL championships at 120 lbs. Unfortunately, two of the three finishers ahead of her were from her same Region (Champion Kailin Sebert of Allen and Bronze medalist, Gabriella Martinez of Klein Collins).

Other UIL qualifiers returning are Kylie Smith (25-10) at 107 and Jayaunna Ennis (24-13) at 235.

Regional qualifiers include Briseis Armendariz, Giovanna Dos Santos, Desiree Romero, Halo Acevedo, and Hailey Acevedo.

Transfer Students:

A huge addition to the College Park Girls’ team is Sophomore transfer student Landri Vongonten (39-2) , from College Station A&M Consolidated….
