2019 CFISD Girls' Tournament Preview

The 17th annual Cy Fair ISD Invitational tournament kicks off Friday, Jan 4 9am at the Berry Center in Cypress, Texas. A total of 83 teams have registered wrestlers for this grueling 2-day event. Let’s face it – for most weight women’s classes, it is easier to find your way to the podium at the UIL State Tournament than to place in the top 6 in the women’s CFISD Invitational. With almost 90 top-ranked 5A and 6A competitors, every single bracket is loaded! Beyond the ranked athletes, most brackets have a handful of competitors with less than 3 losses on the year. By the numbers, the 10 weight classes in this year’s field includes:

10 Freestyle All-Americans
10 2018 UIL State Finalists
4 2018 UIL State Champions
95 lb – BOTH #1’s are expected to compete this week 5A Odelia Lopez of Corpus Christi Ray and 6A Alexis Sanchez from Cy Ridge. Neither of them will have a cake walk to the finals with five other ranked 95 pounders mixing it up.
102 lb – This bracket is topped out with two state finalists from 2018, #1 6A Brittney Cotter of Morton Ranch and #2 5A Jasmine Howard of Azle. Four other ranked wrestlers will be competing including #2 6A Yuliana Rosales of Cy Ridge and #5 5A Valerie Carreon of Richmond Foster.
110 lb – 2018 5A State runner-up Savannah West of Frisco Liberty comes in with the #2 ranking, she is joined by 6A #2 Amanda McAleavey of Cy Creek. The five other ranked women include BOTH 5A and 6A #3’s.
119 lb – From 119 up to 215, the competition is as tough as it gets! This bracket might be the most exciting and competitive in the tournament. BOTH #1’s, defending 5A state champion Jacqueline Ghent of Veterans Memorial and 6A champion, national runner-up and double All American (Cadet AND Junior) Camille Fournier of Weatherford are in this bracket. Both face serious challengers including 6A #2 All American Olivia Mottley of Cy Ranch and BOTH #4’s 6A Annamarie Crixell of Oak Ridge and 5A Ariana Rodriguez of College Station and a total of NINE top ranked competitors.
128 lb – If 119 is the most exciting bracket – 128 is, by far, the most brutal! Looming above all competitors is defending Freestyle National Champion and 2018 state runner up #1 6A Xochitl Mota-Pettis of Klein and ELEVEN other top 10 wrestlers, including BOTH #2’s plus 3,4,5,6,7 (x2), 9 (x2) and 10. Xochitl will be looking to stay ahead of the Jones’ – #2 5A Emma Jones of Victoria West and #2 6A Brianna “Beastie” Jones of Klein Oak.
138 lb – Things get slightly less overwhelming but no less competitive at 138, with #1 5A defending State Champion Adelyhdra Perez of Uvalde and 6A State Runner-up All American #2 Jordan Suarez of Morton Ranch leading a group of TEN ranked competitors.
148 lb – while there are no current #1’s in this bracket, we expect to see wrestlers ranked 2,3,4 (x2), 5,6,7,8,9, and 10. The top ranked competitors are both UIL State silver medalists, 2017 Cadet Freestyle Cadet National Finalists, All Americans, familiar foes, USA Texas teammates and friends:  #2 6A Hunter Robinson of College Park and #3 6A Nia Miranda of Cy Ranch.  Neither is a finals shoe-in as this bracket is chock full of capable spoilers including #5 6A Megan Thomas of Katy and #4 5A Elizabeth Hubbard of Azle.
165 lb – With only 7 ranked 165-pounders, we expect to see some new faces show up in the weekly polls. Top contenders include #4 5A (@148lb) Elizabeth Hubbard of Azle and #5 6A Faydat Bello of Cypress Park.  Keep an eye out for Freestyle All American 6A #9 Joylynn Wegman of Timber Creek who may take advantage of the opportunity to move up the ranks.
185 lb – This is another of those “must-see” competitive brackets where absolutely anything can happen. There are eleven top-10 185-pounders including BOTH #1’s – 5A #1 Natalia Villegas of Veterans Memorial and 6A #1 2018 UIL state runner-up Bianca Rosales of Timber Creek. 6A #2 Ashley Molina of Langham Creek missed last season with a back injury but looks stronger than ever this season, while #3 6A All American Brittyn Corbishley of College Park has been establishing herself as the future of the weight class.
215 lb – There are plenty of surprises possible at 215lb – always. Last Season, Seven Lakes’ Gabby Holloway wrestled her first match at Districts, then proceeded to run the tables to win the 6A state title, continuing her campaign in Freestyle, where she defeated fellow Texan Alyssa Alvarez to claim the National Championship in Fargo. As intimidating as her presence on the mat may be, she will see some legit competition, including #4 6A Ashley Tapp of Morton Ranch who will be looking to avenge an earlier loss against her district rival.
