Waller High School Dog House Duals
Waller High School held it’s annual, early season Dog House Duals on Saturday, giving nine schools the opportunity to get some much-needed mat time against neighboring schools. The usual five Klein ISD schools were in attendance, along with newcomers Katy Paetow, Katy Freeman, Conroe Grand Oaks high schools were in attendance.

One of these days when next-door neighbor Tomball ISD snaps to it, and begins an official UIL wrestling program, their two high schools may be added to the Duals. But for now, their neighbors in Klein ISD, Waller ISD, and Cy Fair ISD reap the benefits of dedicated wrestlers moving out of the zone to belong to a district with a wrestling program. OK, off my soapbox.
I’m never really quite sure how the organization of these Duals are set-up, and with the mess that is Flo Wrestling and live high school coverage is, these matchups were tough to follow. I’m sure that I am not the only one who really misses TrackWrestling’s Dashboard. Two schools wrestled four times, some three, two, or one time. It was the same for the Boys’ dual matches. The clear winner of the Girls’ side was Katy Paetow, who won all 4 of their matches, followed by Klein Oak with a 3-1 record. Below are each team’s results as reported under Track’s Browse>Season>Team> Schedule buttons.
There were eighteen ranked girls who wrestled on Saturday. I’ll highlight each one’s matches below.

Leading the way for the Katy Paetow girls wrestling team were Aylin Pagan and Celeste Gonzalez, who are both ranked in their respective weight class. In the initial 6A team ranking, Paetow is slotted at #41. That will change when they add more of their wrestlers to the individual rankings.
Gonzalez is ranked #5 at 110 lbs. She won 4th place at Region 3 last year, but did not place at State. She ended the season with a 27-13 record. She had a 4-0 day at the Duals with one pin, 2 tech falls, with one coming over Klein Forest’s #17 Bella Payes and an 11-6 decision over Klein Oak’s #8 Elisa Cano.
Pagan, who is ranked #10 at 125 lbs. also completed her Saturday 4-0, with an impressive 4 pin day. Two of those pins were recorded with only 0:05 seconds elapsed. Another of her WBF came at the expense of Klein Cain’s Hazel Martinez who is #7 at 130 lbs. Pagan also qualified for the state tournament last season, coming in 4th at 125 in the Region 3 tourney. At State her two losses came to the silver and bronze medal winners. She ended up with a 27-7 record.
Also finishing with an unblemished 4-0 record for the day were Madison Simmons at 140, Sydnie Miller at 170, and Brooklyn Denbow at 125.
The Klein Oak Panthers lost to only Katy Paetow, and their four ranked wrestlers finished with a mixed bag of results. The Klein Oak Girls are currently ranked at #23, but that ranking includes a wrestler who has already graduated.
Elisa Cano is ranked #8 on the Texas Wrestling 11/10 ranking list at 105 lb. Cano. She wrestled at 110 lbs. for the Duals. Her 1-3 record for the day includes losing to two ranked wrestlers, Celeste Gonzalez and Kamryn Quinn of Grand Oaks, and she also suffered a third loss to an unranked wrestler. Her results may prompt her to eventually make that move back to 105 lbs.
Josie Clarke who is ranked #15 at 155 lbs. Has made the drop in weight to qualify for 145 lbs. That move seems to have paid out so far, as she had a 4-0 record, with 1 fall and 2 tech falls.
Liahona White, ranked #17 at 170, has also moved down in weight. She was listed at 155 for three matches, winning 2 by forfeit and losing one to Katy Paetow.
The 4th ranked wrestler is Ariana Rangel, ranked #11 at 235 lbs. No longer having to move up a weight because of having a state champion in front of her (Rylee Ferranti), she has moved to a more natural weight of 190. Rangel was 4-0 for the day with three wins by fall.
Two of the Klein Collins ranked wrestlers, Gabriella Martinez (#3 @125) and Kamryn Quinn (#10 @ 120) were both 3-0 at Waller.
Martinez is back on the mat for her junior year after losing all of her sophomore season due to injury and rehab. She had a bronze medal at the State championship her freshman year, as well as 6 tournament championships. Quinn adds 2 regional qualifying seasons and 1 UIL qualifying season. Quinn’s high school record is 67-24, while Martinez had a 46-3 record in 23-24. I’m looking forward to these two wrestling back-to-back this Wednesday against Katy Mayde Creek.
Klein Collins’ other ranked wrestler, Getsemanni Martinez (#14 @ 140) had a rough day, going 1-2, with her win coming via a forfeit.
While Conroe Grand Oaks only has one ranked wrestler in Aubrie Cheatham (#4 @ 130), she did not wrestle. The team still notched two wins out of three duals. Their top performer of the day was 170 lb. Mya Perez Martinez, a 2X region qualifier. Mya was 3-0 with three wins by fall. Her high school record for the previous three seasons is 48-42.
Klein Cain’s ranked wrestlers are 115 lb. #8 Alia Baker, 130 lb. #7 Hazel Martinez, and 235 lb. #13 Alexandra Pace.
Baker, 50-9 last season and 80-29 over the last two years, went 2-0 with one fall. Martinez, a 2X Region qualifier was 35-18 last season, with a 49-31 cumulative record. She was 1-1 with a loss by fall to an impressive performance by Aylin Pagan as previously mentioned. Alejandra Pace was 1-0 with one WBF.
Klein Forest’s three ranked wrestlers are #17 Bella Payes at 110 lbs., #19 Jasmine Torres at 125, and #17 Genesis Mejia at 190 lbs.
Payes qualified for Region 2 last year with a 4th place District 7 finish, and a 20-8 record. She did not place and ended with a 15-9 record. Payes was another of Paetow’s Celeste Gonzalez victims during the duals, losing by a TF.
Torres has qualified for the regional tournament 2X, but has yet to break through to the State tourney. She has a 34-19 record over her first two seasons. Torres lost by fall to Paetow’s Brooklyn Denbow.
Lastly, Genesis Mejia won her match against Paetow with a 0:30 pin against Yanelia Munoz. Mejia is also a 2X regional qualifier, with a two-year record of 42-22.
Klein only had one recorded match, and that was against Katy Paetow. Only one of their ranked wrestlers participated, Amira Gray. Gray has qualified for regionals in both of her first two seasons on the mat. She won her only match of the Dual by fall over Valeria Baez Gonzalez in 1:12.
That does it for the Girls, now for the Boys.

Lots of wrestlers who showed some rust, getting some good work in and working to get down to the weight that they will end up at for the post season. There is a lot more to
