Underdogs, Upsets & Tech Falls: Full Recap of the 2025 Maverick Stampede Boys Tournament

Katy Morton Ranch High School hosted their annual Maverick Stampede Wrestling Tournament that included 5A and 6A public schools, and a couple of TAPPS and SPC school teams show up from San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Conroe, Mission, Conroe, Fort Bend County, the Hill Country, South Texas, as well as the greater Houston area for two days of intense wrestling.

It’s always great to see wrestlers from the different classifications grouped together to test their skills and endurance with each other, and plenty of wrestlers from schools with lower student enrollment improved their reputations against boys from the “big” schools. Three of the weight classes were won by 5A schools. Five others in the 5A and Prep schools also won 2nd or 3rd place medals.

Let’s see who those wrestlers were that went head-to-head with their 6A rivals.

All rankings quoted were as of November 25th, a week before the tournament.

106 lbs.

Santiago Miranda, Mission Sharyland’s lightweight was the first 5A wrestler to knock off a ranked 6A foe when he pinned number 1 seed, and 12th ranked Sebastian Garcia of Bridgeland in the quarterfinals. Despite the fact that Miranda held a 6-3 lead into the third period, it was a lead he would not hold onto.  Miranda attempted to spin behind a Gutierrez shot, but he was too high and Gutierrez was able to grab an elbow, then his head, and put him on his back. Gutierrez pinned Miranda with a reverse half and leg at 4:45 for the gold medal.

This finals match had two wrestlers who are currently ranked in the top six in Texas. Fernando Morales of Clear Lake is the top seed is the 2nd ranked wrestler while his challenger, Andy Vila of Katy Paetow, is ranked #6. Both wrestlers have only one loss on the season. Morales made it to the finals with a quarterfinal Tech Fall over #8 James Coleman.

Both wrestlers would not commit to an aggressive takedown during the first period. Vila was even cautioned for stalling. That being said, there was a scoreless tie going into the second period. Morales chose bottom. As Morales was standing, Vila tried to throw a cradle, and Morales was able to get Vila on his hip enabling Morales to get a reversal.  Vila was able to get a reversal of his own before the end of the period, bringing the score to 2-2 into the third.

With Vila starting on bottom, Morales chose an optional start, ceding a point to Vila. Vila went in on a deep single, but could not capitalize. The referee blew his second out-of-bounds call of the match while a wrestler still had a foot inside the circle. Vila gets in deep again, but Morales keeps him from getting the takedown. They go out of bounds and Morales gets a stall warning. With 0:30 left, they restart and Morales immediately shoots and gets the takedown with only six seconds left on the clock for a 5-3 win.  I’m sure these two have not seen the last of each other, especially since they are both in Region 3.

All four top seeds at 120 lbs. made it to the semifinals, where the first seed and #10 ranked Jiovani Hernandez of Katy Paetow was pinned by the fourth seed/unranked Shawn Coffel of Cibolo Steele. The third seed and #15 ranked Ryo Calderon of Cy Ridge “Teched” the second seed and #18 ranked Jeremy Zamora of Humble, 16-1, setting up a final between Coffel and Calderon.

Both wrestlers came out with a lot of movement, but it was Coffel who got the first takedown, gave up an escape, and got the second takedown before the whistle sounded to bring a 6-1 lead into the second period.

Calderon deferred and Coffel chose bottom, hoping to advance his lead. Coffel secured the reversal after a quick scramble. Coffel was working an armbar and half, but Ryu kept his far leg up so he couldn’t be turned. At that point, Coffel grabbed a near-side cradle, and turned Calderon to his back. The ref slapped the mat as the towel guy was coming out with 0:13 left in the period.

Nicholas Bellino of Corpus Christi Carroll, was the top seeded wrestler in the bracket, as well as ranked the #7 5A wrestler meat Leslie Hall, who was the second seed and #17 ranked 6A wrestler from Lamar Fulshear. Both wrestlers bullied their way through the bracket for the opportunity to bring home the gold. Hall with 3 pins and two TFs, and Bellino with 3 pins and a MD.

There was no scoring in the first 1:50, until Hall had a deep double that he did not give up on. Bellino went to his butt and quickly turned, giving up the takedown, and avoiding the exposure of his back. 3-0 in Hall’s favor going into the 2nd.

Bellino chose neutral, but was unable to use it to his advantage, as Hall needed only fifteen seconds to score his second takedown with another double. Using a tight waist and cross-wrist, Hall tilted Bellino for a nearfall 2. He followed that up with doing it two more times for a 4 point and another 3 points, to end the match with a 15-0 Tech Fall at 3:42.

132 lbs.

At 132 lbs., Ethan Gonzalez the #4 ranked wrestler from 5A Edinburg Vela came into the tournament sporting a 15-0 record, which was good enough for the first seed, especially when you add in his 6th place finish at the UIL State tournament last season. His closest competitor met him in the finals. That was Robert Valdez of Northwest Nelson. Valdez had a #7 ranking at the time.

Gonzalez Teched 6A #15 Joshua Kemp from Bridgeland in the Semis, while Valdez decisioned #13 Zach Tolley of Caney Creek in the quarters and pinned the #2 seed, Angel Salas of Richmond Foster in the Semis.

With his long and lean stature, Gonzalez sure looked like he would be a leg rider, and as sure as the weather can change in Texas if you wait 24 hours, Gonzalez scored his first takedown while his leg was in. Valdez delayed the inevitable until the second period, but as soon as Gonzalez could get him down on his hip while leg was in, he switched to a reverse half, and went perpendicular and got the fall at 3:12.

Aiden Baker, another ranked wrestler from 5A, came into the finals with a 2025 UIL 5th place medal, a number one seed, a #2 ranking, and an undefeated record, was matched up with 6A #10 Ali Salem from Katy Taylor, who also qualified for the State tourney last year, but did not place. Salem defeated 5A #10 Jose Sanchez of Edinburg Economedes 18-0 in the semis.

This match was all Baker. He led after the first period, 6-1, after the second period, 13-3, and secured the 21-5 Tech Fall at 5:17. To his credit, Salem gave up no back points.

144 lbs.

The finals in this weight  were both State qualifiers last year. 6A # 6 Andrei Gavaza of Cinco Ranch and 6A #12 Tyler Donette of Cy Ranch faced off for the gold  medal. Donette had the tougher route to the finals as he Teched the Prep #4 James Brennan of Episcopal Houston, pinned #9 (150) Cayden Miller of Morton Ranch, and pinned the top seed, #15 Aiden Peterson of Richmond Foster. Gavaza did not face any ranked wrestlers, but had three pins and on MD nonetheless.

Gavaza got the first takedown and rode Donette out the rest of the first period with a leg ride. In the second, Gavaza started down and stood and escaped in ten seconds. Another thirty seconds later, he shrugged Donette by and took control for the takedown.

Donette chose neutral to try to make up some points. He did catch Gavaza with his hips down and turned it into a takedown. Gavaza tapped the mat for the ref to stop, looked like he got hit in the nose. After the restart, Donette cut him loose to try for another takedown, he got into Gavaza’s legs, but couldn’t get control. Gavaza did get control for three more points, and the match would end shortly after with Gavaza winning an 11-3 major decision.

150 lbs.

The top two seeds met in the finals of 150 lbs. Nicholas Torres the #6 ranked 157 pounder from 5A Mission Sharyland was the top seed. Torres placed 4th in the state last year. The second seed was #11 ranked Micah McCaskill of 6A San Antonio Churchill. Both wrestlers were undefeated. McCaskill decisioned #12 Rueben Castro in the Semis.

Before the match even started, McCaskill was up 1-0, as Torres was penalized for wearing his tee shirt out onto the mat. McCaskill had a tough time figuring out Torres’ neutral strategy of wrestling on one knee. The period ended with that 1-0 lead.

McCaskill chose bottom and took almost a minute before he was able to get free. He then lengthened his lead with the first takedown of the match, which brought the score to 5-0 going into the third period.  Torres chose neutral but was unable to get any positioning over McCaskill for a takedown. McCaskill did get a takedown, and bumped the score to 8-0. Torres did get his first point with two seconds left. This match and title belonged to the Churchill Roughrider, and he would be going back to San Antonio with his undefeated record up to 23-0.

157 lbs.

Tristan Forsman the #3 ranked Clear Lake Falcon would keep his record unblemished at 18-0 as he defeated #7 Luis Garcia of Clute Brazoswood. Garcia took Forsman the distance, but could only amass two escape points in losing the major decision, 11-2. Foresman really turned on the heat in the third period where he earned 7 of his 11 points via an escape, takedown, and a 3-point nearfall.

Forsman is hoping this will be his year to have a shine in February. He has qualified for the State tourney all three of his previous high school seasons, but has not yet placed.

165 lbs.

Breyden Jefferies-Arndt, the 6A #5 ranked wrestler from Bridgeland rode his top seed into the finals via two Falls and a Tech Fall. His opponent was #13 ranked Maddox Fritz of Cinco Ranch. Northwest Nelson. This finals match was never in any serious doubt despite there being no scoring in the first period. Jefferies built a 6-1 lead in the first period. Fritz couldn’t really get anything over on Jefferies. He did score a reversal in the third period, but couldn’t do anything while on top. The final decision was 7-3.

#17 ranked  Josiah Villarreal of Northwest Nelson met #10 ranked Calel Johnson of Comal Canyon in the finals of this weight class.

I have seen many different spellings of Johnson’s first name, and it seems as if his results are mixed with someone from Indiana under the name Cale, but only his records (although not all of them) are under the spelling Calel. And I do believe that only the coach can correct the spelling and organize the records on Track/Flo.

Anyway you spell it, Calel took care of Josiah with a first period pin that was recorded at 1:37, the fastest of the finals. Johnson’s record now stands at 12-1 for the season.

In the most anticipated match of the day, two of this year’s highlight reel wrestlers met for their first match, but certainly not their last of the year. #4 ranked Sean Perez of Humble, last year’s 3rd place 175 pounder, stepped up to face #4 (215) Saul Gutierrez of Langham Creek. The two had met once last season in the finals of the Klein Collins Tiger Classic, where Perez recorded an 11-4 victory. The fans were crowded around the mat for this one.

Gutierrez had two close throws in the first period, narrowly missing takedowns because of ending out of the circle, both times he seemed to have Perez on his back, but they did not count. Unfortunately, those were the only attempts at taking Perez down. Gutierrez only tried his throws and did not mix them up with any other type of takedown. Perez is too good a wrestler for that. Perez ended up with two takedowns in the first period to one escape for Gutierrez. 6-1.

In the second period, Perez deferred, and Gutierrez chose neutral. He tried to throw Perez again, and Perez got another takedown. At that point, Gutierrez seemed to check out. He got called for stalling three more times in the second period, adding two more points to Perez’ total. 11-1.

Perez chose neutral in the third period, and got his fourth takedown. Perez was called for another stall and this time it was two points, giving Perez 16 to Gutierrez’ 1: a Tech Fall was called at 4:47.

This match was a real head scratcher, not what many expected at all.

215 lbs.

Roman Nino, the #1 ranked wrestler for 5A Corpus Christi Carroll met JP Smith, Cinco Ranch’s #3 ranked wrestler. Nino finished last season with a silver medal in the UIL 5A State championships at 190 lbs. His record was 55-3. Smith finished last year with a 4th place medal in the 6A championships at 215 lbs. Smith had a 44-7 record.

In a match that started off slowly, the scoring quickly accelerated at the end of the first period as Smith scored a takedown with twenty seconds left, and Nino escaped right at the end of the period. That was all they needed to let things fly.

There were four more lead changes in the next minute of action, and after the first 1:09 of the second, Smith held a 12-6 lead. But then Nino escaped and brought Smith down to his back and was able to win the match by pinning him at 3:35. Nino’s record now stands at 16-0, while Smith’s goes to 13-1.

This excitement level of this match more than made up for the letdown of the previous match.

Grant Bahnsen, the #2 ranked heavyweight and last year’s bronze medalist at State took on challenger and UIL qualifier, Isaiah Rivera of Conroe Caney Creek. Rivera is ranked #7. These two are not strangers to each other, having wrestled multiple times against each other, with Bahnsen always coming out on top.

As is the case with a lot of heavyweight matches, the score was knotted up at 0-0 going into the second period. The second period saw Bahnsen score an escape in the first ten seconds, and then things slowed down until Rivera was called for stalling two times, giving Bahnsen his second point.

Rivera chose bottom for the third period. Bahnsen was called for stalling almost halfway through the period, and then he got busy. Twenty seconds later he had Rivera on his back, and Bahnsen had another gold medal to add to his collection.

I’m sure would be willing to trade all of those medals in for the gold in February. But that will take some work to do as the #1 ranked heavyweight in 6A is Ke’Shawn Jones. Jones and Bahnsen are in the same District, so yes, plenty of work ahead.

Looking at the team point totals, you can see that two of the 5A teams represented themselves quite well, with Mission Sharyland finishing 5th and Corpus Christi Carroll earning the 9th spot.
