I’ve identified some of the matches that I most want to see in Round 1 of the Boys’ and Girls’ UIL State Championship tournament, starting at the lower weight classes that you may want to target on your list for Friday morning’s Must-See ‘watching’ at the Berry Center.
BOYS:
106 lbs.
Nick Payne (34-5), the # 5 Conroe Woodlands College Park stellar freshman is challenging the Region 1 Champion, #2 Hector Ortiz (37-6) of El Paso Eastwood. Payne has a phenomenal freshman season and will show what he’s made of when he takes on Ortiz. Ortiz was 5th in this weight last year. Only three of Ortiz’ losses were to a UIL wrestler, and all three were to #1 ranked/Seed Dylan Ota.
Another first round match-up to watch will pit two 11th graders: #4 Kingston Stephens of Dallas Jesuit vs. #6 Matthew Govea of Keller Central.
113 lbs.
At this weight, #7 Garrett Patterson (40-4), the Region 4, third place winner will challenge #5 Carson Ota (35-6) of Southlake Carroll. Patterson will be looking to avenge an 11-1 loss in the Finals of the CFISD tournament in this very arena, five weeks ago, at the hands of Ota.
132 lbs.
#7 Andrew Huerta (44-4) of the Woodlands High School meets #8 Wesley Patterson (44-3) of San Antonio Johnson in the first round. Huerta finished 4th in a stacked Region 2 tournament behind #1 Caio Aron, #2 Javin Jackson-Bey and #6 Nathan Burchfiel. Patterson suffered two of his three defeats to Huerta: by fall in the CFISD finals, and a much closer 10-8 decision in the finals of the Cy Ridge Classic. Should be a really good one.
