If its February at the Cypress ISD Berry Center, and there are buses parked in the back from all over the state of Texas, then it must be the Texas UIL State 5A/6A Wrestling Championship Weekend.

On Day 1, Championship Round 1 and the Quarterfinals were wrestled, as well as one round of consolation brackets. After Day 1, the standings for the top five stood at:

  1. Allen 72.5
  2. Arlington Martin 68.5
  3. Conroe Woodlands College Park 51.5
  4. Rockwall 40.5
  5. Southlake Carroll 34.0

On to the Semifinals:

106 lbs:

#1 Dylan Ota (43-3) of Southlake Carroll, the returning State Champ at 106 lbs. recorded two pins to get to the semis to face #10 Fernando Morales (40-4) of Clear Lake. On the bottom half of the bracket, #2 Hector Ortiz (39-6) of El Paso Eastwood will face #6 Matthew Govea (28-6) of Keller Central.

113 lbs:

In the only weight class where we see all of the top 4 ranked WrestlingTexas.Com wrestlers moving into the semifinals, #1 Cayden Campbell (36-6)  of Allen moves on to face #4 Adrian Fierros (24-0) of Katy, and #2 Jackson Shipley (30-2) meets Alexander Tapia (49-3) of El Paso Franklin. Tapia’s wins include pins of 0:41 and 0:22.

120 lbs:

The two best wrestlers at 120 lbs. will meet in the Semis; #2 Santiago Ramirez (30-0) of Houston Westside, used two TFs to advance to face Izayiah Chavez (38-1) of Allen. Chavez had two TFs to move on. On the bottom half of the bracket, #7 Cael Brubaker (35-3) of McKinney Boyd pinned #3 Aljon Morales (29-6) of Killeen Shoemaker in the quarterfinals to earn the right to face #8 Braulio Estrada (47-3) of El Paso Franklin.
