CyFair ISD 23rd Annual Wrestling Tournament

Shares

The 23rd Annual CFISD Invitational Wrestling Tournament will start off 2026 with 96 high school  teams scheduled to participate in the Boys’ side of the event. 92 of those teams are from Texas 5A and 6A schools, and as of the writing of this preview (12/28/2025), there are three teams from Louisiana and one from New Mexico. Simple math would indicate that if all teams fill all fourteen weights, that would mean there would be 1,344 wrestlers just for the Boys. But we know that all teams cannot fill all of their weights; regardless, we’re still looking at easily more than 1,000 boys competing for medals in the biggest varsity-focused event at one location, over one weekend, in the country.

This preview will highlight the participating boys who are currently ranked in the top twenty 5A and 6A schools in the most recent rankings by WrestlingTexas. The article also assumes that the participating teams are those that are listed in the tournament’s Trackwrestling classic view, and the ranked wrestlers will be present. By my count, if all of the ranked wrestlers participate, that would make 167 ranked wrestlers spread throughout the brackets.

Some of the top 5A wrestlers have a great opportunity to shine against their counterparts from the larger 6A schools.

Out-of-State teams:

Aztec HS, New Mexico:

Aztec is the defending 2025 4A New Mexico State Champion team with eight returning place winners. Seniors: Ian (1st  at 127lbs) and Ethan (3rd at 121) Vigil, Aiden Trujillo (5th at 189), Rylee Clinton (6th at 160); and Juniors: CJ Saiz (2nd at 107), James Moore (3rd at 114), and Cory Doughlas (.5th at 139).

Ian Vigil is currently the #13 Pound 4 Pound wrestler in New Mexico, and CJ Saiz is #25 P4P.

Sulphur HS, Louisiana

Two of their wrestlers were recently ranked 3rd in Louisiana on the Crescent City Wrestling Facebook page: Ty Bowser a 9th grader at 113 lbs., and Carson Thibodeaux, who is also a freshman at 138 lbs.

Also participating in the Boys’ CFISD tournament are two additional Louisiana schools: DeQuincy HS and Westlake HS, both from Louisiana.

106 lbs.

The favorite to beat in this bracket would have to be the 5A #1 Esteban Vela of Corpus Christi Veterans (20-0) with 15 wins by fall, 2 by MD, 1 TF, and 3 Forfeits.

#14 Jesus Ramos El Paso Bel Air

Two of the favorites here have to be 6A #2 Kingston Stephens, (19-0), or 5A #2 Fabian Cruz of College Station (22-), both undefeated and have beaten others in rankings.

Ty Bowser from Sulphur, LA and CJ Vigil of Aztec, NM look to make a big impression in Texas.

With the top ranked wrestlers starting at #8 for both 6A and 5A, if I had to pick a favorite without knowing the abilities of the out-of-state wrestlers, I’d have to pick Shawn Coffel of Cibolo Steele. Coffel’s record stands at 22-1. During this season he has beaten 6A #9, #10, #17, and #18, as well as 5A #8 and #16.

#8 Cody Humphrey San Antonio Veterans Memorial

#9 Alejandro Rodriguez Uvalde

#17 Julian Limon Corpus Christi King

#20 Colton Harper Leander Rouse

126 lbs.

You would think that 6A #1 Mason Joe of Austin Bowie would be the clear favorite, but his record of 17-3 indicates that in a marathon like this tournament, there just might be someone out there who may stake their claim to the top row of the podium.

6A

#1 Mason Joe Austin Bowie

#12 Christopher Woods San Antonio Reagan

#13 Jeremiah Garcia San Antonio Johnson

#14 Collin Tingley Cypress Woods

#15 Leslie Hall Lamar Fulshear

#16 Zaiden Hernandez San Antonio Reagan

5A

#10 Nicholas Bellino Corpus Christi Carroll

#11 Hudson Chilton Comal Smithson Valley

#14 Avery Kulhawy Comal Pieper

132 lbs.

If we just looked at the ranked wrestlers participating in the tournament, Andrew Huerta of Conroe The Woodlands’ name jumps out as the favorite, but the only action that he has taken part in was in November at the Cy Ridge Classic. He did win that tournament, and defeated two current 6A ranked wrestlers in the process (#8 Berry and #18 Kemp). But the question remains, will he be ready to participate? If not, then Cody Welch of Bryan could step into the role as the favorite.

#8 Chance Berry Cypress Fairbanks

#9 Brody Banks Houston Bellaire

#18 Joshua Kemp Bridgeland

#20 Xzaevier Rosa Cypress Creek

5A

#16 Samuel Summers Liberty Hill

#18 Jayden Elizondo College Station

138 lbs.

5A #2 Aiden Baker of Mission Sharyland is sporting a 21-0 record coming into the CFISD, with wins over #10 Ali Salem, #13 Ashton Gonzalez, and #14 Jose Sanchez. I would say that he is the clear top dog in this weight class.

Sulphur’s Carson Thibodeaux brings his #3 Louisiana ranking to Cypress to see how he matches up. And New Mexico’s 2025 4A State champ (126) from Aztec HS, makes the 1,000-mile trip to test his skills versus the field at the Berry Center.

#9 Robert Soto Southlake Carroll

#11 Caleb Hennig Cedar Park Vista Ridge

#16 Dylan Clay Katy Seven Lakes

#18 Amori Smith Waller

#2 Aiden Baker Mission Sharyland

#19 Nathan Chino Corpus Christi King

5A #2 Enrique Olivares of Rosenberg, #3 Ethan Moran of Sharyland Pioneer, and #4 Aiden Valdovinos of Rio Grand City all have the stage set for them to show the state that 5A can compete and win with the big boys. The highest ranked 6A wrestler in the tournament is #6 Tyler Donnette.

#7 Griffen Deitch Comal Pieper

#8 Carlos Rodriguez Uvalde

#15 Santiago Vasquez Mission Sharyland

#17 Pablo Vasquez College Station A&M

#19 Kaiden Fernandez Lampasas

150 lbs.

Nicholas Torres (20-1) of 5A Mission Sharyland is the highest ranked wrestler in the bracket, but his one loss is to the undefeated 6A #10 Micah McCaskill of San Antonio Churchill, and there are three other 6A wrestlers ranked above him. This should be a fun one.

#5 Tyson Gibson Southlake Carroll

#9 Cayden Miller Katy Morton Ranch

#10 Micah McCaskill San Antonio Churchill

#8 Seth Saenz New Braunfels

#10 Joaquin Rosales Rosenberg Terry

#13 Peter Mietus Leander Rouse

157 lbs.

Bryce Palmer, the #1 ranked 5A wrestler out of Comal Smithson Valley, is the overwhelming favorite to win this bracket, if he wrestles. His last recorded bout seems to be before Thanksgiving. I’m not sure if there is an injury that he is recovering from, but last year’s 5A state champion at 150 lbs. has the goods to carry the weekend. Looking to meet the champ’s challenge would be 6A #4 Tristan Forsman of Clear Lake who is looking to improve his 22-0 record and three tournament titles.

Another Remington, this one Jared, who is the #1 ranked 6A wrestler at 175, and is the returning 157 lb. state silver medal winner, leads the way to the podium at 175 lbs. Remington comes in with a 21-0 record that includes 19 WBF and 2 WBTF.

#8 Preston Kepler Comal Smithson Valley

#9 John Humphries College Station

#12 Valeriano Elizondo Mission Sharyland

#13 Noah Bell Comal Pieper

190 lbs.

The three highest ranked 6A wrestlers are all 2025 State place winners. #2 ranked Pasquale Maurici (20-0, w/ sixteen WBF) finished 3rd at 190 last year. #3 ranked Sean Perez (24-0) of Humble finished 3rd at 175 lbs. Saul Gutierrez (19-2 ) of Langham Creek finished 5th at 175 lbs.

Maurici and Perez seem like the best bets to make an awesome final match. Both have provided  Gutierrez with his only losses of the season.

#14 Kade Stratton Comal Pieper

The 5A #1 ranked Roman Nino of Corpus Christi Carroll is the 190 lb. 2025 state silver medalist. He is currently 24-0, with wins over 6A #2 JP Smith and #11 Zayde Fachetti, both of whom are not in the tournament this year. This would lend one to believe that he is the one to beat to get that top spot on the podium.

285 lbs.

And finally, to the heavyweights; how many of you will not leave the arena if the two top 285 pounders make it to the final match of the tournament?

Ke’Shawn Jones (4-0) of League City Clear Creek is ranked #1, while Grant Bahnsen of Clear Lake is ranked #2 with a 24-0 record. Despite them being in the same district, they have not met on the mat yet. In last year’s state tournament, Bahnsen defeated Jones in the consolation semis due to a medical forfeit on his way to a 3rd place medal. Jones received the 5th place medal. Despite not getting a better medal than Bahnsen at State, Jones did decision Bahnsen in the semifinals of Regions and Districts last season.

This one should be a good one.
