Cibolo Steele Girls Take the Stampede: Complete Recap of an Action-Packed Weekend in Katy

Shares

The Girls portion of the Maverick Stampede featured 24 Houston area teams, as well as two 5A teams from Corpus Christi, one from San Antonio, two south Texas border schools, two hill country schools, and a Brazos valley school. Within those schools, there were 14 #1, #2, #3, and #4 ranked wrestlers wreaking havoc in their brackets. Only six of those top four ranked wrestlers would end up as champions.

Let’s dig into the action.

100 lbs.

Danielle Shirey, the #13 ranked 100 lb. wrestler from Clute Brazoswood met #20 Vada McCubbin of Cibolo Steele in the finals. McCubbin made it via a 12-9 decision over #3 Kaelani Palmer of Richmond Foster.

In a back-and-forth match, both wrestlers had the chance for a pin, but both only came away with 4-point near falls. McCubbin pulled within 1 point in the third, but could not turn Shirey to take the lead, and Shirey came out on top with an 11-10 decision.

105 lbs.

#19 ranked Monica Caballero of Jersey Village met unranked Carrie Murrell of Cy Ridge in the finals. Caballero made it there on the strength of her three pins. This match would not be as easy for her. Caballero won this match by earning takedowns in each of the three periods, all as a result of her defending Murrell’s takedown attempts. Murrell did earn four escapes, but she needed more than that in this match. Final score in favor of Caballero, 9-4.

110 lbs.

#8 ranked Cameron Hodge, a ninth grader from Cibolo Steele, pinned #7 ranked Celeste Gonzalez in Hodge’s first match in 0:47. Hodge went on to win a TF 16-1 over #15 @ 105 lbs. Sofiya Gianaros in the semifinals before meeting Gianna Zavala of Langham Creek in the finals. Hodge got out to a first period 9-2 lead.

Zavala came back in the second period with a takedown and Nearfall-4, but was unable to seal the deal, as Hodge got a reversal and pin to end the match at 3:07. Both girls are strong, but still raw.

On the merit of this title and a big win over Alessandra Toscano of EP Eastwood at the Super 32 SOAP, Hodge looks to have a big future.

115 lbs.

The crowd was treated to a great 115 lb. final between #1 ranked Nevada Daniels (11-0) of Katy Cinco Ranch and #2 ranked Stephanie Lopez (15-2) of Katy Mayde Creek. Lopez pinned her way to the finals, setting up a rematch from the finals at the Cinco Ranch Big 12 tournament where Daniels was down 3-0 and reversed Lopez and pinned her in the second period.

This match would be much closer, with both wrestlers earning nearfall points, but not being able to get the fall. Daniels got a first period takedown after Lopez had a good single-leg, but she switched out of it. Lopez escaped, and they went into the second period with Daniels up 3-1.

Daniels chose down and after a minute, Lopez turned Daniels over, and was so close to getting a pin, but was unable to put her away and settled for 4. Daniels got out for an escape, and the second period ended 5-4 in Lopez’s favor. Lopez chose down for the third, and there we would stay. It looked like she injured her left elbow at one point, as time was called on the mat while she was attended to.

Daniels used a tight waist, wrist control and an armbar to ride Lopez for a majority of the period. Towards the end of the period, Lopez stood and Daniels used an underhook and muscled Lopez down to her back and earned a Nearfall 2 as time expired for a 6-5 win.

120 lbs.

The #1 5A Genevieve Bellino, last year’s UIL-5A 120 lb. champion, and whose career record is 160-18, finished her 4-match tournament with fourth, first period pin, this one coming in 1:09. Her total mat time for the 2-day tournament was an amazing 3:35.

In a bracket that had the top four seeds advance to the semifinals, 6A #8 ranked, Aylin Pagan of Katy Paetow had a remarkable 5-win run to the tournament finals, with two pins in the prelims, and a pin over #7 Sadie Smith, a 7-1 decision over #6 Emily Melham, and her pin in the finals over #10 Kayla Dunn. Pagan now stands at 18-0 for the season.

130 lbs.

Another ranked wrestler completed a noteworthy title run as #4 Liana Benitez of San Antonio Churchill upped her season record to 17-0, with five wins by fall, to grab the 130 lb. championship. All of Benitez’ pins came in the first period. Benitez, an 11th grader who has qualified for the State tournament the last two years, had a 6th place finish last year.

Elvia Davila, the 5A #4 ranked wrestler from Mission Sharyland became the second 5A champion as she wrapped up her title run with dominating wins over 6A # 9 Zoey Gomez of Lamar Fulshear and 5A # 10 Celyn Morales of Edinburg Vela. Davila is a 2x UIL qualifier, and last year’s Region 4 champ.

140 lbs.

In a weight class that seemed to be wide open, #15 Leah Bentley of Lamar Fulshear and #19 Alex Quinto of Cinco Ranch navigated their way to the finals with three pins apiece.  Bentley’s pins were all recorded in the first period.

The final match was also decided by a fall. Quinto started the scoring with the first takedown in the first minute. Bentley reversed and rode her out to end the period. Quinto chose neutral, but was taken down and turned. Bentley’s winning pin was recorded at 4:00.

145 lbs.

#1 ranked Christina Decker of Clear Lake, last season’s 145 lb. 6th place medalist, had a first period pin over #14 Kenna Novak in the quarterfinals, and met #11 Maria Caires of Cy Ranch in the finals. Decker’s prowess was visible throughout the match as she recorded four takedowns in the first two periods, and went on to record a pin at 4:52 for the gold medal.

155 lbs.

In a weight class with no ranked wrestlers, Leah Hall, the 5th seed from Jersey Village and Anna  Arreola Escobar from Cy Park met in the finals. Both wrestlers used three pins and a decision to reach the finals, where their bout was decided by a decision.

The pair entered the second period with Hall trailing 3-2. Hall chose bottom and earned a stalling penalty point, then escaped and scored a takedown, securing the win and the title with three seconds to go, for a 7-3 decision.

170 lbs.

Angelina Patterson of Cy Ranch, last year’s 6th place medalist at the State 6A 132 lb. weight class, was ranked #4 at 140 lbs. earlier this month. I don’t think she will be wrestling at that weight class anymore. Patterson used four first period pins to reach the finals including a pin over #14 Maria Gonzalez of Brazoswood, to lock horns with #15 Madeline Moore of Cinco Ranch.

The two finalists went into the second period with a scoreless tie, with Moore choosing top.  Moore was unable to break Patterson down from her knees, and Patterson eventually stood up and was awarded an escape point. After a minute of being tied up, Patterson was able to get around for a 3-point takedown to up her lead to 4-0. Patterson chose down for the third period and Moore had no luck turning her over for the first 1:46. Instead of a stalling call, a stalemate was called at 1:46. A clasp call against Moore with 14 seconds left increased Patterson’s lead to 5-0. After the restart, Patterson stood, turned, and scored an escape right before the whistle, earning a 7-0 decision victory for the title.

190 lbs.

Up next was a finals match that pitted undefeated #1 Asaiya Golphin of Cibolo Steele with undefeated #2 Jaida Kuntz from Richmond Foster. Golphin is a 2X UIL medalist, 4th in 2024, and 3rd in 2025. Kuntz, who qualified for State last year, but did not place, was looking to avenge a 3-0, Maverick Stampede finals loss from last year.

Both girls tread lightly during the first period, not committing to a takedown attempt that would take themselves off of their feet. The second period started scoreless with Golphin on the top.  After thirty seconds Golphin was attempting a leg ride, instead of riding across her body, she was up across her near shoulder. but riding too high, and Kuntz was able to hip-heist Golphin over to her back, where Golphin immediately complained of an injured shoulder. Kuntz was given 4 nearfall points for the stop in action back points, and the action was restarted. Golphin escaped, but again initiated a stop in action due to her shoulder. The match was ended, and Kuntz was awarded a 6-1 victory for the tournament championship. A good match that could have been great. Golphin’s shoulder may be an issue for some time coming.

235 lbs.

Richmond Foster has a problem that many schools wish they could share: they have two heavyweights that could both make it to the final day of the State tournament. Seeded number 1 in this tournament was Izis Kouokam (13-2) . She qualified for the 5A State tournament in 2024, but did not advance when they made the jump to 6A in 2025. The second seed, Sally Kazeem (6-1) finished 2nd in the UIL 6A 235 lb. championships last year.

In this tournament, Kazeem made it to the finals via three wins by fall. Kouokam was defeated by Darlene Cotton of Corpus Christi Carroll in the semifinals.

Kazeem attempted a throw of Cotton, but when hitting the mat, Cotton was able to slip out the back, and was awarded a takedown. Kazeem escaped quickly to make it a 3-1 lead for Cotton which is the way the first period ended. Cotton chose neutral for the second period. The pair of heavyweights repeated the hand fighting and positioning through the first three-fourths of the first period until Kazeem got a takedown, and put Cotton on her back, getting the pin at 3:15.
