  • Klein Oak made a comeback in the middle weights
  • Klein Oak won the dual match against Klein Collins 37-36 in a close competition

On Wednesday night, the #28 Klein Collins Tigers travelled 4.5 miles to visit their nearest District 7-6A rival, #4 Klein Oak, for a dual match involving both Girls and Boys’ teams. Conspicuous by their absence from the Girls’ teams were Klein Collins’ star wrestler from last year, Gabriella Martinez, placed 3rd at 126 at State, and ranked 3rd at 126, Sarah Vanhorn, ranked #20 at 114, as well as Klein Oak’s Rylee Ferranti, a 2X State champ at 185 and ranked 1st at that weight,Ā  Malaina Jones finished 4th at 145 at State and currently ranked 1st at that weight, and finally ranked # 13 at 235 is Ariana Rangel.Ā  Martinez has yet to wrestle a match this season after a very active summer, while Ferranti is recovering from a broken bone in her leg, Jones and Rangel, currently 6-0, must have had the night off. I’m not certain about Vanhorn. I do know that both teams just participated in a dual tournament last weekend, so getting your JV backups some mat time is a good thing.

This Girl’s match began with Klein Collins’ Andrea Nunez getting six team points via a forfeit at 100 lbs. Klein Oak 0, Klein Collins 6

At 107, Kamryn Quinn (4-1) and ranked 13th at 107 lbs. is the Klein Collins transfer from Conroe Grand Oaks, stepped on the mat to take on Chloe Hanes (5-1). As a 9th grader last season, Quinn finished 5th at the Region 2 tournament, and ended with a 29-12 record. Hanes, currently ranked 4th at 100 lbs., is a 2X Region qualifier, finishing 4th and 6th the last two years, and qualifying for State last year. Her combined 3-year record is currently 88-36.

The two wrestlers have wrestled each other before; Hanes coming out on top by fall twice, and both at the 4:00 minute mark. This time, Quinn came out ready, scoring a first period takedown with a nifty back trip in the first 0:20. After spending a good minute preventing from going to a near fall, Hanes escaped a millisecond before the buzzer sounded. Hanes chose up to begin the second. Hanes was able to turn Quinn over with a cradle, get a NF-4, but Quinn rolled through it and took control, putting Hanes on her back until the end of the period. 9-5 lead for Quinn. The KC tiger chose neutral and went straight for a tie-up, then to a headlock, and wrestled Hanes down to the mat where she ended up on her back. The mat was slapped at 4:26.Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā
