Schools from the northwest part of the Dallas metroplex dominated the 15th Annual Coyote Classic on Saturday, Jan. 17.
Keller won the team title with 130 points, with Trophy Club Byron Nelson taking third with 118 points and Argyle was fourth with 107 1/2 points.
However, perhaps the surprise team in the top four was runner-up Carrollton Creekview.
The 5A school had only one champion in the event at Frisco Heritage High School.
That belonged to Andre Moyron, who is ranked No. 4 in the latest state rankings. The junior posted a pin in 1:05 against Frisco Memorial’s Trevin Williams to claim the Mustangs crown.
Three other Mustangs made the finals and ended up second. That included Owen Eikenhorst (120), Paul Miranda (190) and Chris Mendoza (215).
Hugo Levano (106) took third for Creekview.
Eikenhorst was ranked No. 3 and Miranda was No. 6.
“It has been a long time (since we’ve been good); we’ve all been working hard in the mat room and we are all holding each other accountable,” he said. “We are always the underdog, always coming and where we are from?”
He says a lot of people haven’t heard of the school, which is part of the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and located off I-35E, south of Lewisville Lake.
All four of the wins for Moyron came from pins and all within the first period.
Moyron (20-2) pinned Heritage’s Shawnerick Lloyd with 8 seconds left in the first period in the semifinals. He was up 10-1 in the finals before getting the pin.
Both of Keller’s champions beat Creekview wrestlers, which vaulted them into first place. Heading into the finals, the Mustangs were in first place.
Drew Brinkmeier, after winning the Trojan Classic in Euless last weekend, won again. The senior went 3-0 and capped his run with a pin over Eikenhorst in 1:47. Brinkmeier, No. 6 in 6A, is now 32-5 on the season.
AJ Parchment took first for the Indians at 190 pounds. No. 6 in the rankings, the senior bounced back from a loss in the finals the previous weekend by pinning Miranda 35 seconds into the second period.
Fellow Class 6A school Byron Nelson took third and had one champion: Matthew Moore.
The junior won the 215-pound title with four first-period pins. He took down Mendoza in 55 seconds.
Argyle, another Class 5A school, had a pair of champions.
Tobias Gilman (113) and Collin Gates (157) each won by different methods.
The No. 5-ranked Gilman beat Matthew Govea of Keller Central by a 17-6 major decision, thanks to five takedowns. Gilman had two tech falls and a pin on this day as well, improving to 37-5.
Gates overcame a 4-0 deficit to beat Kaden Hess of Nelson in the semifinals, 12-5.
The junior won the finals by a disqualification against Korbin Ross of Whitesboro. Officials ruled that Ross bit Gates, who led 1-0 at the time, in the second period.
