West Texas Takeover: Eastwood and Franklin Lead the Charge to UIL State Championships

Defending Class 6A girls wrestling championship El Paso Eastwood will send 7 wrestlers to the UIL State Championships.

The Lady Troopers won the Region 1-6A team title with 196 1/2 points, finishing with three champions in the event.

Three other West Texas schools finished in the top 10 of the standings. El Paso Franklin, ranked No. 10 in the state, was fourth with 123 1/2 points. Wolfforth Friendship placed sixth and El Paso Pebble Hills was ninth.

Allessandra Toscano, Hailey Delgado and Daniela Hernandez took first for the Lady Troopers.

No. 2-ranked Toscano won 9-0 over No. 3-ranked Audrey Moore from Keller in the 105-pound finals. The sophomore is 33-2 after her 4-0 run. 

Sophomore Hailey Delgado stayed perfect on the year with a 4-0 run. She pinned her way to the 110-pound crown, beating No. 2 Ryan Rose Salazar from Keller Central in what could be a precursor to the state title this upcoming weekend.

Delgado is now 47-0 on the year and is 93-0 in two years of high school. 

Third-ranked Hernandez pinned Coppell’s Isabella Malcolm in 3:56. Hernandez, a senior, is 32-1 heading to the state meet. 

Jaylee DeSantos (115) and Nayeli Ortiz (135) were runners-up for the Lady Troopers. Amirah Castillo Sarabia (140) and Isabella Moreno (170) finished third for Eastwood.

Franklin

The Cougars had a pair of champions, though there was only one finals match.

Jubilee Rendon, ranked No. 1 at 100 pounds, won the regional title in that bracket. She ended with an 11-5 win over Xariah Sandoval from Friendship. 

Rendon is 51-1, going to the state meet. 

No. 6-ranked Naime Abdallah won by medical forfeit at 115 pounds for the Cougars. 

Jayada Ramos (140) was a runner-up after falling to Marli Denmark by a pin in the finals.

Pebble Hills

The Spartans had two in the finals and Ayden Quinones came out as a champion.

The senior, ranked No. 2 at 145, had two pins, a major decision and a tech fall. She is 44-1 going to the state meet. 

Quinones pinned Naziah Moore from Flower Mound in 5:06 for the title. 

Jessica Pyatt, No. 7 at 235, lost to No. 1-ranked Maliana Heimuli of Euless Trinity by a 3-0 decision. 

Frenship

Five of six regional qualifiers for the Lady Tigers.

Sandoval had the highest finish by taking second at 100 pounds, falling to Rendon. 

Katalyna Quintanilla, unranked, took third at 105 pounds. The freshman lost her first match and then won 5 in a row to punch a ticket to state. She won her last two matches by a combined 3 points. 

Joslyn Sabinas (120), Kristianna Boyum (125) and Ayiana Wright (130) all took fourth. Boyum won a challenge match. She won 6-3 in overtime against Genaveve Gonzalez from Eastwood to punch her ticket to state.
