The District 16-5A Wrestling Tournament was a showcase of dedication, skill, and perseverance as some of the best female wrestlers in the region competed for top honors. This highly anticipated event brought together athletes from multiple schools, all striving to secure their place on the podium and advance to the next stage of competition. The energy in the gym was electric, with each match displaying the relentless effort and passion these wrestlers have poured into their sport.
As a wrestling mom, it was bittersweet to watch so many familiar faces on the mat while my daughter was away training at her university. Over the years, I have seen these young athletes grow into strong, determined wrestlers, and witnessing their progress was both inspiring and emotional.
In the 100-pound weight class, Hailyn Gonzalez from Mission Sharyland Pioneer claimed first place after a close 5-4 decision over Marlette Garcia of Pharr Valley View. Julieta Chapa of La Joya Juarez-Lincoln secured third place with a fall in 1:54 against Kaylee Rodriguez of Mission Veterans Memorial, who finished fourth.
At 107 pounds, McAllen’s Ava Aragon dominated, securing the championship with a fall in 1:44 against Audrey Zarate from Rio Grande City Grulla. Destiny Salinas from Mission Sharyland Pioneer claimed third place by pinning Amaris Trevino of Mission Veterans Memorial in just 19 seconds. Nevaeh Guajardo from Vanguard Academy Mozart-Alamo finished fourth.
The 114-pound division saw Delia Tolston of Pharr Valley View take first place, pinning Rio Grande City’s Dayana Gonzalez in 2:56. Abbie McVey of Vanguard Academy Rembrandt-Pharr claimed third place with a pin in 1:53 over Mairim Cortes from McAllen Memorial, who finished fourth.
At 120 pounds, Yaritzi Prado of Pharr Valley View earned gold by pinning Georgina Rangel from McAllen Memorial in just 1:13. Joselyn Tamez of Rio Grande City Grulla took third place with a 6-4 decision over Miranda Ramos from McAllen, who placed fourth.
In the 126-pound class, Elvia Davila of Mission Sharyland took first place, defeating Allie Salas of Mission Veterans Memorial with a 7-1 decision. Monserrat Benitez from Rio Grande City secured third place with a 1-0 decision against Yazmin Martinez of La Joya Palmview, who finished fourth.
At 132 pounds, Graciela Juarez of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo North won first place after pinning Abigail Fuentes of McAllen in 3:53. Jacklyn Ruelas from McAllen Memorial took third place with a fall in 1:57 over Yarely Garcia of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial, who placed fourth.
The 138-pound weight class saw McAllen’s Kara Hidalgo win gold with a fall in 4:55 over Celestia Hurtado from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial. Madison Hamor of Mission Veterans Memorial finished third after defeating Dealexandria Gonzalez of Pharr Valley View with an 8-2 decision. Gonzalez finished fourth.
At 145 pounds, Bronwyn Sadlier of McAllen remained undefeated, securing first place with a fall in 2:00 over Alexia Navarro from Pharr Valley View. Dafne Gaona of La Joya Juarez-Lincoln claimed third place, while Destinee Rodriguez of Mission Sharyland Pioneer finished fourth.
The 152-pound championship went to Brianna Shefke of Pharr Valley View after pinning Yveritxe Ramirez of Mission Veterans Memorial in just 55 seconds. Aleinad Saenz of Rio Grande City Grulla took third place, pinning Kimberly Reyes from Rio Grande City in 3:35. Reyes finished fourth.
At 165 pounds, Jacklyn Navarro from La Joya Juarez-Lincoln claimed first place by pinning Reanna Zapata of Mission Veterans Memorial in 3:52. Cielo Hernandez of Roma finished third with a fall in 3:16 over Italeah Escamilla from Pharr Valley View, who placed fourth.
In the 185-pound division, Angelica Martinez from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Southwest secured first place with a fall in 3:12 against Janessa Garcia of Rio Grande City. Carolina Herrera of McAllen Memorial took third, followed by Diana Varela from Pharr Valley View in fourth.
At 235 pounds, Isabella Cordero of Mission Veterans Memorial won the championship after an injury default against Ayleen Ortiz of Pharr Valley View. Dora Olivarez of Rio Grande City Grulla took third place by pinning Cristina Rocha from La Joya Palmview in 3:29. Rocha finished fourth.
Watching these young women compete with such passion and determination was a reminder of the strength of female wrestlers. Though my daughter was not present, her spirit was felt in every match, and I was proud to witness the growth and success of so many talented athletes. In the end, Pharr Valley View was crowned the back-to-back District 16-5A team champion, a testament to their strong program and hardworking athletes. Their continued success highlights the depth of talent in South Texas wrestling and sets a high standard for future competitions.
