Wrestlers Zavala, Suarez named Wayland Baptist Student-Athletes of the Week

Wrestlers Desiree Zavala and Jordan Suarez have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week after their performances at UWW Junior and U23 Nationals in Omaha, Neb.

Zavala took first place in dominant fashion in the U23 59-kilo weight division, winning her three matches by a combined 31-0. The senior from Grandview, Wash., was second in the balloting for most outstanding female freestyle wrestler at the three-day event that featured the top college-age wrestlers in the nation. The win secured a bid to the 2021 Senior World Team Trials for Zavala.

Coach Glenn Gray said Zavala was rewarded for “staying focused and for the hard work she puts in on a day-to-day basis. She also does a great job rallying the rest of the team.”

Suarez, competing in juniors, lost her opening match at 59 kilos to defending national champion Gracie Figueroa. But Suarez was perfect after that, winning all six of her remaining matches to claim third place.

“Every win she had was against a national-level girl, either a collegiate all-American or a nationally-ranked girl,” Gray said of Suarez, a freshman from Katy, Texas.
