Wrestlers ‘solid’ at Hastings Open

HASTINGS, Neb. – Nina Pham and Olivia Ricci took first for the top-ranked Wayland Baptist women while Johnathon Ortegon took gold for the Pioneer men at this weekend’s Hastings Open.

Pham placed first in the 116-pound weight class while Ricci was first at 170 pounds. In addition, five WBU wrestlers took home second places: Caryssa Aguirre at 101, Rebekah Cordova at 130, Jordan Suarez at 136, Sadie Forman at 143 and Elena Vazquez at 155.

In addition to Ortegon winning the 125-pound division, Gabe Gray placed third at 125 pounds while Jesse Diaz and Moses Torres were fourth at 133 and 141, respectively.

“It was a really tough tournament, but both our men and women did a really solid job,” WBU assistant coach Glenn Gray said. “The men are improving daily and the women showed why they are ranked No. 1.”

Next up for the WBU men is a dual against Texas Wesleyan on Jan. 20 in Fort Worth, while the Pioneer women will also wrestle the Rams after competing in the York Open in Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 16.
