FORT WORTH – Wayland Baptist’s top-ranked women won, 25-15, while the Pioneer men narrowly fell, 24-21, as WBU wrestling took on Texas Wesleyan in dual action here Wednesday night.
“I thought the women wrestled really well. We still have a few of our guns out of the lineup, but I’m really proud of their efforts,” new head coach Kiiler Stephens said.
“The men showed tonight how much they have improved. The same team absolutely dominated us in November (48-9), and tonight we had a very competitive match. There’s still a lot of work to do, but we are heading in the right direction.”
WBU’s women recorded three falls, by Nina Pham at 109 pounds, Rebekah Cordova at 123, and by Jordan Suarez at 143. Other winners for the Pioneers were Sadie Forman (155) and Olivia Ricci (170), both by forfeit.
The WBU men got a pair of pins from Alex Bonner at 149 and Cody (Seth) Dixon at 174. Other victories for the Pioneers came on decision from Alex Pena (125) and Jesse Diaz (133) and on sudden victory by Hunter McCarty (184).
Next for the WBU men is a quad at 1 p.m. Thursday in Bartlesville, Okla., against host Oklahoma Wesleyan, Bethany (Kan.) and Lyon (Ark.), while the Pioneer women, whose dual against Oklahoma City on Saturday was cancelled, compete Feb. 8 at the Grand View Open in Des Moines, Iowa.
