Wayland Baptist swept Sooner Athletic Conference men’s and women’s wrestlerse of the week with Johnathon Ortegon and Nina Pham being honored following their performances at the Hastings Open in Nebraska.
Pham, a senior from San Jose, Calif., dominated the 116-pound class, posting three 10-0 tech falls and a fall at 1:09 in the other match. She faced two wrestlers from Midland University (Neb.) and, in her final two matches, teammates Mia Arceneaux and Felicity Ortega.
Pham, the NAIA’s top-ranked wrestler at 101, is 5-0 on the season. She’s the defending SAC champion at 109 pounds and was runner-up two years ago at the NAIA National Invitational.
Just as dominating, Ortegon captured first place in the 125-pound class. He won his first two matches by major decision (13-3) and technical fall (16-1) then his final two by fall (5:33 and 2:00), defeating three opponents from Briar Cliff and one from Morningside, Iowa.
A sophomore from Amarillo, Ortegon is a transfer from the University of Nebraska. He is 8-1 this season.
