Wrestlers roll over No. 5 OCU, 41-3

Wayland Baptist’s women’s wrestling team came up with dominant win over Oklahoma City University on Wednesday evening in the Laney Center as the No. 7 Pioneers rolled over the fifth-ranked Stars, 41-3.

“It was a dominant win over a team that has been riddled with injuries,” Wayland coach Aaron Meister said. “I thank (OCU) Coach (Matt) Stevens for coming down despite a depleted lineup. It would have been real easy for him to bow out, but he showed real courage and integrity.”

Wayland picked up four wins by forfeit as the Pioneers dropped only one of the 10 bouts. Brittany Bates, at 136 pounds, and Marina Briceno, at 143, both won by fall while second-ranked Tarkyia Mensah (130) and Jathiya Isaac (123) posted tech fall victories. Sixth-ranked Kierra Boyce (191) prevailed by decision.

After two forfeits, OCU won the first contested match in the 116-pound class.

“After the first match the team got the ball rolling,” Meister said.

Isaac and Mensah posted back-to-back 10-0 tech falls.

“Jathiya got her offense going and got a dominant tech fall win. That got the momentum started,” Meister said. “Tarkyia came out and did what Tarkyia does. She wrestled smart, she wrestled hard, and she scored points in bunches. She’s really dominant on top.”

Next up was Bates against frequent opponent Hailey Garcia. Meister said facing and beating someone three times is difficult because they begin to pick up on your tendencies, but Bates earned the pin. “That’s a good sign because it shows she’s continuing to progress,” Meister said.

Next, Briceno earned WBU’s other pin. “Any time you get a pin it’s a good thing,” the coach said.

The final bout pitted Boyce and Monica Mason. The senior Boyce is ranked just one spot ahead of No. 7 Mason, and she managed to pull out a 3-0 decision.
“That was a good win for Kierra over a good, ranked opponent,” Meister said. “Kierra has won the last couple over her, so it was important for her to keep that momentum so she can get a seed at nationals. She has a chance to win (nationals) if she wrestles well.”

Next for Wayland, which improved its dual record to 10-1, is a match against Ottawa in Kansas on Jan. 28. The 13th-ranked WBU men also will take on Ottawa after a trip to Goodland, Kan., to wrestle Otero Junior College and Northwest Kansas Tech on Jan. 26.

“We’re looking forward to Ottawa,” Meister said. “We just need to keep working hard and putting the time in every day.”

Both teams host Bacone Feb. 4 in the final match before the NAIA Central Qualifier for the men on Feb. 18 in Ottawa and WCWA Nationals for the women on Feb. 10 and 11 in Oklahoma City.
