Wayland Baptist leads Wrestlers ranked by USA Wrestling from Texas

Five Wayland Baptist wrestlers are listed in the latest USA Wrestling Senior Women’s rankings.

Leading the group is two-time WCWA national champion Tamyra Mensah, who is ranked No. 1 at 69 kilograms/152 pounds. Mensah, a native of Katy who recently completed her eligibility at Wayland, won last month’s Women’s World Team Trials in Las Vegas to earn a spot on the 2017 U.S. Senior World Team, defeating Titan Mercury teammate Elena Pirozhkova, who is ranked No. 2.

Mensah is set to compete next week at Beat the Streets at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Brittany Marshall, a junior from Lewisville, is ranked third at 75 kg/165 pounds, behind Victoria Francis and Eric Clodgo. Marshall took third place in her weight class at the World Team Trials to earn a spot on the USA National Team.

At 63 kg/138.75 pounds, Marina Briceño is ranked eighth, which was her place at the World Team Trials. Briceño is a junior from Simi Valley, Calif.

Rounding out the rankings, Brittany Bates is ninth at 60 kg/132 lbs., while Jathiya Isaac is 10th at 55 kg/121 lbs. Bates, a sophomore from Doyline, La., was eighth in Las Vegas. Isaac is a junior from Houston.

Wayland coach Aaron Meister said another Pioneer, senior Mayra Ramirez, likely should be ranked fifth at 116 pounds but due to an expected oversight was not included.

Meister said the rankings for his student-athletes serve as “a testament to everybody in the program and all the hard work we’re doing.

“I’m glad to see that recognition, and it’s only going to motivate us to work harder.”
