Returning champions Chavez, Castro among semifinalists at USMC Cadet Girls Folkstyle Nationals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – A pair of returning USA Wrestling Cadet Folkstyle National champions have reached the semifinals at the U.S. Marine Corps Girls Cadet Folkstyle Nationals, which began Thursday night at the Cox Convention Center.

Seeking to repeat as Cadet Folkstyle National champions are Samara Chavez of Sisters on the Mat WC of Texas (106) and Leilah Castro of Ohio (117). Last year Castro won the Cadet Folkstyle title at 122.

Chavez is ranked No. 7 in the National Girls High School rankings. She pinned Halie Stokes of the Oklahoma Girls National Team in 35 second in the quarterfinals, and will face Genesis Quirarte of the California Folkstyle National Team in the semifinals.

Castro is ranked No. 3 in the National Girls High School rankings. She defeated Alisha Narvaez of the California Folkstyle National Team, 5-0 in the quarterfinals and will face Kearanie Johnson of the Oklahoma Girls National Team in the semifinals.

2017 Cadet Folkstyle National runner-up Logan Ryan of Team Michigan advanced to the 144-pound semifinals,
pinning Suravieve Searcy of Team Arkansas in 4:57 in the quarterfinals. Her semifinal opponent is Gianna Anaya of the California Folkstyle National Team.

Cayden Condit of SOT Academy in Colorado knocked off 2017 Cadet Folkstyle Nationals runner-up Taryn Martin of the Ohio Girls National Team by pin in 5:31 in a 106-pound quarterfinals. Condit will face Olivia Shore of Ohio in the semifinals. Shore was third at the Cadet Folkstyle Nationals last year.

There were a number of great quarterfinal matches.

At 144 pounds, 2017 California high school state champion Emmily Patneaud, ranked No. 6 in the nation, drew Nia Miranda of Texas, a 6A state runner-up this year. The match was tied at 1-1 in regulation, and went to overtime where neither athlete scored in sudden victory. Miranda scored an escape in the first tiebreaker. Patneaud went on bottom, scored a reversal and finished it with a pin in her tiebreaker to advance. Miranda who was a Cadet National champion in freestyle last year, while Patneaud finished fourth.

At 164 pounds, Katie Moore of New York, eighth in the 2017 Cadet Nationals in freestyle, drew 2018 California state high school champion Katja Osteen, a freshman ranked No. 9 in the nation. Osteen, a Schoolgirl national freestyle champion last year, lived up to her billing, scoring a first-period pin.

• Tristan Kelly of Team Colorado at 152 pounds (ranked No. 2 at 164)
• Adelina Parra of San Fernando HS of California at 180 pounds (ranked No. 4 at 180)
• Camille Fournier of Spartan Mat Club in Texas at 112 pounds (ranked No. 6 at 106)
• Charmayne Delong of Wyoming Women’s Team at 132 pounds (ranked No. 7 at 132)
• Jaycee Foeller of Team Missouri at 180 pounds (ranked No. 7 at 180)
• New York’s Mia Macaluso,of the CA Nightmare at 127 pounds (ranked No. 8 at 127)

The USMC Girls Cadet Folkstyle Nationals continue on Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. with the semifinals, followed immediately by the consolation rounds and the championship medal match finals.

Two other competitions begin on Friday, the USMC Girls Junior Folkstyle Nationals and the U23 Freestyle World Team Trials.
