University of Houston Downtown update

Words from University of Houston Downtown,  will start doing the updates as they are submitted

Welcome Back Wrestlers!

The 2017-2018 Academic Year begins in earnest at the University of Houston-Downtown this week. Our team is excited to get back to class, and to welcome to campus several new members joining the team this year.

With the start of the new school year comes this first edition of the UHD Wrestling Monthly Newsletter. Each month we will:

  • update you on our team’s progress throughout the season,
  • inform you of upcoming home matches, tournaments, camps, and clinics for you to attend, and
  • highlight our wrestler’s individual accomplishments both on and off the mat.

Houston-area wrestling has seen tremendous growth both in the number of participants and the skill-level of those participants, and it is because of people like you who support the various levels of wrestling in our community. UHD Wrestling is opening a new front in that community at the collegiate level. We invite you to come along for the ride!

UHD Wrestling: Will You Be Next?

Who is UHD Wrestling?

UHD Wrestling started in 2015 as a member of the NCWA’s Southwest Conference. The program aims to create a lasting positive, inclusive, and competitive culture where all athletes can learn, grow, and achieve goals directed at achievement both on and off the mat, and where they are connected for life to their teammates and to their school. In just three seasons, the team has seen tremendous growth and success: already seven wrestlers have qualified for the NCWA National Championships, three individuals have earned All-American honors, and one has earned Scholar All-American honors.

UHD Wrestling Hosts Summer Camps

The team hosted two camps for area youth and high school wrestlers during the offseason. In May, twelve wrestlers attended the Learn to Turn freestyle technique camp with former head coach Juan Venturi, a former resident athlete at the USA Olympic Training Center. In July, seventeen campers attended a two-day technique camp led by the UHD coaching staff and guest instructor Jon McGovern, head coach at the University of Dubuque. We were absolutely thrilled to host this fantastic group of wrestlers, and to help each of them improve their wrestling skill-set. This is the second year in a row that the team has hosted these camps, and we have plans to continue the tradition in the years to come! Stay tuned to this newsletter and our Facebook page for upcoming camps and events.
