UHD Sends Eight to NCWA National Championships

The University of Houston-Downtown wrestling team will compete at the NCWA National Championships in Allen, TX March 8-10th. The NCWA Southwest Conference was allocated 38 bids to the National Championships this year: the top three placers in each weight class were awarded a big along with five at-large representatives selected by the Conference Committee. UHD 133-pounder Kevin Evans and heavyweight Chris Woods each took second-place at the tournament, with Woods falling to Southwest Conference rival Ikaika Neal of UNT in double-overtime. Both Evans and Woods are returning national qualifiers, the first pair to do so for UHD. Senior heavyweight Blake Cedillo finished third in the tournament and 235-pounder Nelson Fuentes was awarded one of the at-large bids. The men’s team finished fourth in the Conference this season.

Four women will also represent UHD at the NCWA Women’s National Championships, including Ashley Martinez, Mad Torres, Karina Garcia, and Irene Nunez.
