Top Gun Girls Varsity Tournament Showcases Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi Wrestling Talent

The Top Gun Girls Varsity Tournament, held annually to showcase the talents of Rio Grande Valley schools alongside Corpus Christi schools, featured a competitive display of wrestling prowess. With 21 schools participating in the girls’ tournament, the final standings reflected the exceptional performances of the teams. 

Corpus Christi King claimed the top honors with an impressive total of 135 points, showcasing their strength and skill across various weight classes. Valley View High secured the second-place position with 110 points, highlighting their competitive spirit and dedication on the mat. Corpus Christi Carroll secured the third-place spot with a total of 92 points, demonstrating their resilience and proficiency in the tournament. 

Edinburg High secured the fourth-place position with 85 points, showcasing their competitive edge and contributions to the overall team performance. Edinburg Robert Vela rounded out the top five with 77 points, displaying their commitment and achievements in the tournament. 

These results underscore the significance of the Top Gun Girls Varsity Tournament in bringing together schools from different regions, fostering healthy competition, and providing a platform for female wrestlers to showcase their talents. As the tournament progressed, each match unfolded with fierce competition, determination, and remarkable displays of skill. The athletes showcased the evolving landscape of girls’ wrestling, proving their capabilities on the mat and contributing to the growing popularity and recognition of women in the sport.

1st Place Match: 

+ Abigail Mendoza of Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial (Girls) faced off against Ariana Martinez of Corpus Christi Carroll (Girls). Mendoza demonstrated her prowess with a decisive victory, securing a fall at 2:25 and claiming the 1st place position. 

3rd Place Match:

+ Sofia Garcia of Mission Sharyland and Zharick Flores of Edcouch-Elsa engaged in a closely contested match. Garcia emerged victorious with a decisive 14-8 win, earning her the 3rd place spot in the weight class….
