OKLAHOMA CITY – Action wrapped up at the Blue Chip Oklahoma City Open, hosted by Oklahoma City University, on Saturday afternoon, crowning 11 champions.

Five schools picked up two champions each, including Emmanuel College, Grays Harbor, McKendree, OCU and Wayland Baptist.

The tournament began with pool action on Friday and continued with bracket competition on Saturday.

Winning for the host school OCU Stars was All-American Rachel Watters and freshman Monica Mendoza.

Watters, who recently won a spot on the 2017 U.S. U23 World Team, tallied a 6-0 record on the weekend with two bonus-point wins to claim the title at 170 pounds.

Mendoza started the weekend with five pins in pool play before sailing to the 123-pound finals with another pair of falls. In the finals, she was awarded a win by injury default over 2015 Cadet World champion Ronna Heaton of Grays Harbor.

Another 2017 U23 World Team member Cody Pfau won her second-straight tournament with a championship at 109 pounds. A two-time WCWA national champion at OCU and now senior at Emmanuel College, Pfau dominated the field with five first-period falls and a 12-0 tech fall in finals over Vanessa Ramirez of McKendree.

Passion Hollins was the other Emmanuel wrestler victorious on Saturday, winning the title in one of the 155-pound brackets, finishing off the day with a 5-0 decision against Leslie Alaniz of Lindenwood.

Menlo College boasts the other 155-pound champion, returning All-American Iman Kazem. In her run to the title, Kazem claimed wins over two past All-Americans, including Marina Briceno of Wayland Baptist and Kiera Gabaldon of Warner Pacific.

McKendree was well represented, winning crowns at 130 pounds and 143 pounds.

At 130 pounds, 2016 All-American Alexia Ward had a solid tournament, finishing Friday with five 10-0 tech fall wins. On Saturday, she continued her winning ways to advance to the finals, where she faced Abigail Nette, who gave Ward her first test of the weekend. Ward secured the championship with a 4-4 win on criteria.

Two-time All-American Cassandra Herkelman pushed her way through the bracket at 143 pounds. In the finals, she met up with 2015 Cadet World bronze medalist and Emmanuel College freshman Kayla Marano. The Bearcat outlasted the Lion with an 8-5 decision.

Grays Harbor transfers and 2017 All-Americans Desiree Zavala and Paige Baynes climbed to the top of the podium for the Lady Chokers, winning at 136 pounds and 191 pounds, respectively.

Baynes, who was a 2017 WCWA finalist, outscored her opponents 69-5 on the weekend with six tech fall wins. In the finals, she took out Leilani Camargo-Naon of Midland University in a 10-0 win.

Zavala, a 2017 WCWA third-place finisher, ran through the competition at 136 pounds, recording six wins, five of which came with bonus points attached. She matched up with All-American Solin Piearcy of Menlo in the finals, which was her closest match of the weekend. Zavala emerged victorious with a 7-4 win.

Two Wayland Baptist freshmen, Asia Ray and Gabriela Ramos-Diaz, won titles on Saturday. Both competed at the 2017 Junior World Championships in Tampere, Finland, this summer.

Junior World bronze medalist Ray surrendered only one point on the weekend to win the title at 101 pounds, emerging from pool action with an unblemished 5-0 record, which included three pins and two technical falls. In bracket play, Ray notched two pins to earn a spot in the finals, where she defeated Grays Harbor freshman Nina Pham with a 10-0 tech fall.

Ramos-Diaz, a native of Puerto Rico, was similarly dominant at 116 pounds, claiming two wins on Friday to advance to Saturday’s championship bracket. There she took out Emmanuel College’s Victoria Gutierrez in the finals with a 10-0 shutout.
