FORT WORTH — The group of girls wrestlers that will represent Texas at the upcoming USA Wrestling Junior and 16U is a mix of veterans and newcomers.
However, the group headed to the FargoDome in Fargo, N.D., July 14-22, is some of the best in the state.
During practice this week at the Spartan Mat Club in Fort Worth, the group worked on building camaraderie and drills before flying north.
“It’s so awesome getting to wrestle with the best girls in the entire state of Texas; they are all here and so it’s super exciting coming to practice every day getting better,” Little Elm’s Emily Pedro, a runner-up at 6A 126 this past season.
She will be a first-time participant at the meet in Fargo, like Texas teammate Brigitte Garcia, who is from Burleson Centennial.
She is coming off a fifth-place showing at 145 pounds in Class 5A during the regular season — losing two matches by a combined three points at state.
“It’s gonna be tough people but I’m ready because I know if all of them are the best of the country and I’m going, then that means we are in the same group,” Garcia said.
While there are newcomers to the tournament there are returning veterans like Austin Bowie’s Olivia Moreno and The Woodlands College Park’s Anna Vogt on the team…
