Tamyra Mensah-Stock (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 28, 2019.

Over the weekend, 2018 World bronze medalist Mensah-Stock won her third UWW Ranking Series event of the year, claiming the 68 kg title at the Sassari City Matteo Pellicone Memorial International in Italy.

To secure the gold, Mensah-Stock defeated 2018 World silver medalist Danielle Lappage of Canada with a 4-0 shutout, thanks to two first-period takedowns.

Mensah-Stock opened the tournament with a 10-0 technical fall over Maryia Mamashuk of Belarus in round one, then stopped Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan, 7-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Mensah-Stock scored three second-period takedowns to stop Anastasia Bratchikova of Russia, 9-2.

Her City of Sassari gold is added to her Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix championship at 72 kg and Dan Kolov International title at 68 kg, both are 2019 UWW Ranking Series events. She also won the Pan American Championships, which also scores points in the UWW Ranking Series.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at [email protected].
