Steve Horton Brings Home Silver

Coach Steve Horton our Texas USA Freestyle and Greco Roman Director traveled to TBILISI, Georgia and competed in the Veterans  World Championships going 3-1 claiming the Freestyle  Silver World Medal in the 70 kg in Div. D.

TBILISI, Georgia – Steve Horton of Cibolo, Texas, won a silver medal at 70 kg in Div. D, the top performance among U.S. men’s freestyle athletes at the Veterans World Championships on Saturday.

In the gold-medal finals, Horton was edged on a last-second throw by Hamidreza Rabiei Kenari of Iran, 6-4.

Rabiei Kenari on the shot clock, but he secured a leg attack takedown to lead 2-0. Horton responded at the end of the first period with a takedown and a quick gut wrench to lead 4-2 at the break. There was no second-period scoring until the final few seconds of the match, when Rabiei nailed a four-point lateral drop to win the match.

Horton won three straight bouts to qualify for the finals, opening with a 10-0 technical fall over Massimo Aresti of Italy. In the quarterfinals, he won a tight 4-2 battle with Rovshan Guliyev of Azerbaijan. In the semifinals, he secured a 10-0 technical fall over Niyamudin Murtazaev of Russia.

Last year, Horton won two Veterans World medals, a silver in Greco-Roman and a bronze in freestyle.
