In the 24-team Frank Halloran Ranger Classic, two San Antonio schools did well in the standings.
Claudia Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson took third place with 119 1/2 points, while Theodore Roosevelt took fifth with 111 points.
Johnson coach Lee Miller has been bringing the Jaguars to the tournament since the school opened in 2008 and before that, when he was the head coach at Roosevelt, he brought the Rough Riders.
“I was coming before Johnson even opened,” Miller said. “It was awesome to see Roosevelt doing good along with us. We love this tournament and we love the competition. That is why we are here. We love the challenge and it is definitely here every year.”
Both teams had four medalists.
Garrett Patterson (113), Victor Reyna (120), Wesley Patterson (138) and Jacob Baltierra (144) were the medalists for the Jaguars.
Garrett Patterson won three matches but lost by a 10-4 decision to Frisco Centennial’s Enrique Uribe. The other Patterson, Wesley, was a runner-up as well. He also went 3-0 and lost in the finals to Evan Sumrak of Rockwall Heath by a 9-6 decision.
Victor Reyna lost in the quarterfinals to Richardson J.J. Pearce’s Charlie Parquette by a 3-1 decision in overtime. Reyna won his next four to take third place.
“Nothing beats gold,” he said of the medal performance. “It’s a blessing to come from San Antonio and come up a four-hour drive to wrestle and face adversity. There are no easy matches in Dallas. It is state and regional competition.”
Baltierra went 6-2 and lost his third-place match to Waleed Khairi of Birdvilleand also lost to 144-pound champion Ben Pennington of Keller Fossil Ridge….
