Wayland Baptist wrestler Johnathon Ortegon has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Wrestler of the Week.
Ortegon, the 20th-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 125 pounds, knocked off the No. 5 wrestler at that weight, Elias Gonzales, when Wayland faced Arizona Christian in a dual on Saturday in Glendale, Ariz.
A redshirt freshman from Amarillo, Ortegon pinned Gonzales 6:33 into the match.
The win, the sixth straight for Ortegon, improves his overall record to 8-1.
“I am very proud of the run Johnathon is putting together,” WBU coach Kiiler Stephens said.
Ortegon was a three-time state champion at Randall High School who initially signed with the University of Nebraska before transferring to Wayland.
