Recap: Klein vs Cy Ranch

On Tuesday evening, the Cy Ranch Mustangs hosted a dual match with the Klein Bearkats. Both Boys and Girls teams competed.

The Klein Boys team, one of the Houston area’s stronger squads, had just returned from a Saturday tournament in Kearney, Nebraska with two champions, 175 lb Isaac Shereen, and 190 lb Andrew Clayton, as well as a 2nd place finish from last year’s UIL 126 lb 3rd place finisher, Timothy McGuire.

The Cy Ranch team recently earned the third place finish at the Cavalier Clash at College Park HS. Highlighting that finish was a championship earned by Christopher Stiles at 106lbs and 2nd places finishes by Clayton Amador at 175 and Rian Hicks at 215.

The match began with the Klein’s 106 lb Ken Nichols defeating Cy Ranch’s Chris Stiles. Nichols brought an 8-0 lead into the 3rd period and earned a Major Decision with a 16-5 victory.

During the 113 lb match, Brandon Carillo, 6thin the State 106 class last year, built a 10-4 lead in the first period on the strength of five takedowns and releases, before pinning Mateo De la Isla at 1:53.

Cy Ranch received a forfeit at 120 lbs to bring the team score to 10-6, in favor of Klein.

At 126 lbs, Ashton Gamboa of Cy Ranch, overcame a 4-3 deficit by scoring three points in the third period to defeat Jay Aldrete, 6-4, decreasing Klein’s lead to 10-9.
