Prep High School Wrestler of the Year Poll

Benton Phillips – All Saints Episcopal.   Finished 24-5 on the season.  Pinned his way through the finals at PREP State.

Sam Schafer – All Saints Episcopal.   Returning state champion at 106.  Dominated another returning state champion Kinkaid’s Taft Foley in finals at PREP State.  29-3 on the year.  Won several local tournaments including Warrior Invite.  Made Round of 12 at PREP Nationals (one match from All-American)

Ken Matsunaga – St. John’s of Houston.  Defeated a tough opponent in McKinney Christian’s Nate Gwynn by MD in finals. Finished year at 25-7.

Alan Fandarich – Trinity Christian Academy.  Returning state champion. Outstanding season.  Dominated a tough opponent – St. Thomas’ Evan Benevides – in the PREP finals and was an PREP Nationals All-American, finishing 8th.

Skylar Smith – Liberty Christian School.  Heavily recruited, Smith has committed to wrestle for North Carolina State.  Nationally    ranked all year by Intermat.  Dominated all year.  Pinned through finals at PREP State.  Number #2 seed at PREP Nationals behind Blair’s Shane Van Ness.  Despite serious injury, wrestled to a 5th place finish and his 2nd All-American finish at PREP Nationals.  3x PREP State Champ.

Jaren Powell – Liberty Christian School.  Powell, a returning UIL State-Placer at 132, upset favorite and returning state champion Sebastian Jimenez from St Johns with a nasty pin in the finals at PREP State.

Mason Morland – Trinity Christian Academy.  Finished year at 37-9. In one of the deepest weight classes in TAPPS, Morland beat them all, including Enochs of St Thomas, Grannen of St Johns, and Petrek of Bishop Lynch.  He          also pinned Highland Park’s Spencer Bucholtz not once, but twice.

Braeden Baller – All Saints Episcopal.   Finished year 21-3.  Won his 3rd PREP State title by defeating a tough Cort Doyle from      Bishop Lynch in the finals.  Only loss in Texas was to UIL state placer Massoma Endene  from Arlington Bowie.  Repeated as a PREP Nationals All-American by finishing 5th this year.

Kendrick Williams – All Saints Episcopal.  Finished year 29-5.  Defeated a very tough Michael Daichman of St John’s in barn-burner of a final.  Made the Round of 12 at PREP Nationals (one match from All-American).

Zachary Vasquez – San Antonio Christian.  Finished 26-7 on year.  Won a 3-1 decision of St Thomas’ Harrison Heard at PREP finals.  Took 2nd at Prep Slam in Georgia.

Ethan Wilson – Liberty Christian School.  Defeated St Johns’ John Perdue in PREP State finals.  Made the Round of 12 at PREP Nationals (one match from All-American).

Elijah Ellis – St Marks School of Texas. Finished year at 28-10.  Pinned St John’s Jack Curtin in the finals at PREP State.

Charlie Holub – Bishop Lynch High School.  Defeated James Ogunrin from Episcopal High School 5-4 in Prep State finals.  Made round of 12 at PREP Nationals.  Joining Holub in the Round of 12 at PREP Nationals were the two other Texas qualifiers at 220.  Ogunrin, and Jackson Phillips from St Thomas, both of whom were beaten by Holub this year.

Gabe Moore – Liberty Christian School.  Moore is a heavyweight with the skill of a lightweight.  He has been nationally ranked in his class by Intermat all year.  He pinned through the finals and wrestled to a 7th place finish at PREP Nationals, making him an All-American.  Very impressive for any wrestler, much less a freshman.
