Ortegon is Texas’ first NAIA Wrestler of Week

Wayland Baptist’s Johnathon Ortegon has been named NAIA Men’s Wrestler of the Week, making him the first in Texas to receive that recognition.

Earlier this week named the Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Wrestler of the Week, Ortegon was honored after he upset the No. 5 wrestler in the NAIA at 125 pounds during a road dual Saturday against Arizona Christian. Ortegon pinned Elias Gonzales 6:33 in the match.

A redshirt freshman from Amarillo and a graduate of Randall High School, Ortegon is the 20th-ranked wrestler in the NAIA at 125 pounds. He has won eight of nine matches this season, with victories in his last six outings.

“I am very proud of the run Johnathon is putting together,” WBU coach Killer Stephens said.

Ortegon was a three-time state champion at Randall who initially signed with the University of Nebraska before transferring to WBU.
