Ortegon, Avent named Wayland Baptist Student-Athletes of the Week

Wrestler Johnathon Ortegon and basketball player Devin Avent have been named Wayland Baptist University Student-Athletes of the Week.

Ortegon, a redshirt freshman from Amarillo, captured first place in the 125-pound class at the Hastings Open in Nebraska.

In dominating fashion, Ortegon won his first two matches by major decision and technical fall then his final two by fall, defeating three opponents from Briar Cliff and one from Morningside, Iowa.

Ortegon is a transfer from the University of Nebraska.

Avent exploded for 36 points in just his third game as a Pioneer, leading Wayland to a come-from-behind 78-75 road victory over Texas Wesleyan in the team’s Sooner Athletic Conference opener.

A 6-foot freshman guard from Fort Worth, Avent hit 11-of-21 field goals, including 4-of-11 3-pointers, and nailed 10-of-12 free throws (83 percent). He scored 30 points in the second half alone to fuel the Pioneers’ comeback from an 18-point hole in the final 10 minutes.

Avent also led the team with six rebounds and three assists, plus had one steal as he played 39-plus minutes.

“With the way he’s playing it’s hard to take him off the court,” coach Ty Harrelson said. “We know he’s a great player, and he was ready today. He’s worked really hard on his conditioning after a long break. He’s been pushing himself in practice to do extra.

“He was really good pretty much all day, and fantastic down the stretch.”
