Men & women split dual matches against OCU, Missouri Baptist
Mich Napier
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Wayland Baptist men’s and women’s wrestling teams competed in a pair of duels here Wednesday. The eighth-ranked WBU women split their duels, defeating No. 9 Missouri Baptist, 28-19, but losing to No. 3 Oklahoma City, 30-16. The 19th-ranked Pioneer men’s team slammed Missouri Baptist, 28-18, before falling to second-ranked Oklahoma City, 37-3.
Coach Aaron Meister gave credit to his teams for competing well despite an early-morning practice and same-day travel.
“That’s a pretty tough feat,” Meister said.
The WBU women took on the Missouri Baptist Spartans first and did not disappoint.  Junior 191-pounder Kierra Boyce and freshmen Alana Quackenbush at 155 pounds and Evelynn Simmons at 101 defeated two ranked Spartans to give Wayland a 27-11 cushion.
Meister was pleased with the whole team’s performance.
“I’m proud of the way these girls prepared,” Meister said. “It was exemplified in their performance.”
In their second duel against OCU, the WBU women didn’t come out as sharply, losing the first two matches by pin and the third by technical fall, which put them down 19-0. The Pioneers battled back to close the gap to nine but were unable to complete the comeback.
Still, Meister was enthusiastic about how his team competed.
“Although we lost the duel, we battled as a team,” he said.
For the Pioneer men, it took longer to find a groove against the Spartans, but when they did, they didn’t look back. Meister doesn’t have all of his line-up ready to go due to injury, but he was happy with the student-athletes that competed.
“I didn’t know how they would do,” the coach said. “We showed some depth on this team.”
After defeating the Spartans, 28-18, the Pioneers faced the No. 2-ranked Stars and didn’t have the same success.
Although they didn’t win, Meister mentioned one match that was “the highlight of the night” as senior Mich Napier at 184 pounds earned a decision over the No.1-ranked wrestler in the country, Derek Sivertsen, 14-10.
Meister was satisfied with the split of the duels.
“I was content with going 1-1,” he said. “It will make the ride home a little easier.”
Next for the Pioneer women will be the Missouri Valley Open on Nov. 14 in Marshall, Mo. The WBU men will host the Northwest Tech Mavericks (Kan.) at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Laney Center.
