Katy HS Wrestling coach Vinnie Lowe held court as Katy honored its senior wrestlers tonight. Coach Lowe introduced each senior with their parents/family members and reminisced of the memories each student/athlete made in the years he/she participated in the Tiger program.
This Class of 2023 is not just any run of the mill Tiger wrestling class. It includes a group of highly touted Texas ranked wrestlers: Jeremy Manibog (#1, 165), Rodney Trotter (#1,285), Juan Pablo Garcia (#3, 157), and Connor Timmons (#7, 144).
Coach Lowe will be doubling down on his efforts to replace those seniors. Also honored were senior varsity wrestlers Travis Hutchison, Jackson Roberts, Vicente Veloquin, and Leo Coutino.
Unfortunately, I did not have a program that listed all of the seniors, but you can see by the photograph above, that it is a large group. This lends itself to the fact that it takes all levels of wrestlers to make a TEAM. Having wrestlers on a team of all grade levels makes daily practices such that all will improve.
The Boys wrestling started off at 106 lbs. where Brandon Carrillo was awarded a forfeit, Klein 6, Katy 0
At 113 Cleveland Scott from Katy took on Kenneth Nichols of Klein.
The two sparred for awhile before Nichols shot for the legs and got 2. Scott was able to scramble and get an escape before Nichols scored another escape on the edge of the mat before the period ended. It was 4-1 going into the second where Scott chose down.
He earned his escape, but Nichols shot a single, brought it into a standing high crotch and brought Scott down for two.
Scott fought hard for another escape and the two ended the period looking for angle/position to get a shot in. In the third, Nichols started on the bottom and earned a reversal after about 0:30. Scott got one penalty point for Nichols’ second stall warning. The final score ended at 8-5 in favor of Klein’s Kenneth Nichols. Klein 9, Katy 0
