Houston Area Boys Recap

This week in the Houston area, wrestling slowed down a bit.  The area was suffering from a bit of a CFISD hangover.  There were only 3 significant tournaments in the area this week.  The most competitive of these was the Chicken Wing at Houston ISD’s Westside high school. The high end of the Houston talent as well as 4 out of town teams (Rockwall, Coppell, DeQuincy (LA), Sulphur (LA)) battled it out.

See the Chicken Wing Boys Recap on an in depth review of the action there.

The weather on Friday night cancelled a few duals scheduled in the Houston Area, but the action was in full swing Saturday.

The 2020 edition of Katy Seven Lake’s “Spartan Hall of Fame Invite” went down with 18 teams in attendance. Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial and Cedar Park Vista Ridge made the trip and private school Houston Episcopal, threw their hats in the ring for this very competitive tourney.

The home team took the team title by a narrow 10 points over Klein Cain (198-188). 5A squad A&M Consolidated (167) took third as Katy Tomkins (157) and Kingwood (141) Rounded out the top 5.

At a quick glance, the only top 10 wrestlers that looked like they made the trip were 120 #7 Micah White of Kingwood,5A #3  120 Conner George of A&M Consolidated, #3 126 Ruben Calderon of Cy-Falls,#4 126 Cole Minnick of Katy Tompkins and #4 285 Johrdan Howard of Klein Cain.

Micah White won a tough Finals match 6-2 over Conner George @ 120

Calderon handled his Final with a 7-1 victory.

Johrdan Howard Got the pin for the win in his final.

The big news at this tournament might be junior Alex DeValle of Katy 7 lakes getting the pin with 13 seconds left in the match over 126 #4 Cole Minnick.  Minnick was leading 13-3 with 20 second left when DeValle got a reversal that worked its way to the pin.  Previously unranked, DeValle is looking to make a name for his self in a weight class where the Houston area owns 6 of the top 10 spots in the state rankings!

Klein Oak hosted the “Gator Roll Invite” on Saturday as well.  13 teams descended upon Klein Oak for the meet.  The Field consisted of mostly 5A teams with the farthest traveling team being Beaumont United. 5A Caney Creek High School took the win here with a total of 159 points.  They were followed by Friendswood high with 131.  The youngest edition to the Conroe ISD family, Grand Oaks (112), Host School Klein Oak (102), and Houston Lamar (82) Rounded out the top 5.

State Rank #3 @ 182 in the 5A classification, Langston Mayrant might have been the only top 10 wrestler on display. Mayrant showed why he’s the #3 in the state needing only 1 Min and 42 Seconds to pin 2 opponents, the 1stin 6 seconds, and the second in 97 seconds.

The 113’s put on a show in the Finals match with Emmanuel Villa Gomez needing Sudden victory to secure the Gator Roll Title versus Renzo Chavarria of Grand Oaks.

Caney Creek in large part secured the win by having 5 of the tournament’s 14 champions in their weight class.  Nice Win boys!! Good Luck with the rest of the season.  Let them know the Houston area 5 A schools shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Noticeably missing from the scene this week was the team from Katy high. The reining Houston Duals Champs are probably taking a well deserved break from all the tail they’ve been kicking this season.

Next week the big show in town will be on the North side of town at Klein Collins High School for the Annual Tiger Classic.

Good Luck this week Houston!
