Haslet V.R. Eaton had only one champion but the depth through the lineup paved the way to win the District 2-6A held Saturday at Keller Timber Creek in Fort Worth.
The school in the Northwest ISD system had 172 points and had a comfortable cushion in the win. Keller Fossil Ridge was second with 150 points, just ahead of Wolfforth Frenship, which had 147 points.
Ashley Zellner went 3-0 with all pins to claim first place in the 165-pound bracket. She pinned Keller’s Cayenne Foster in the finals at the buzzer of the first period.
Ashlyn Lewis (107) and Neelie Parker (132) were runners-up for the Lady Eagles.
Victoria Duong (120), Keira Michalek (126) and Emilee Zeringue (138) were all third, while Macie Taylor (100) and Avianna Velarde (185) were fourth.
Wolfforth Frenship tied V.R. Eaton with 8 regional qualifiers.
The top four finishers advanced to the regional meet this weekend at W.G. Thomas Coliseum in Haltom City with a chance to move on to state.
The runners-up, Keller Fossil Ridge, led all teams with three individual champions. Kamryn Potter (126), Kinsley Ashburn (185) and Abgale Hernandez (235) won for the Panthers.
All 3 won by pins, including a 13-second victory by Hernandez.
In addition, the team’s two state-ranked girls, Kayla Nguyen (120) and Grace Martinez (165), had top-four finishes to move on.
Keller, Keller Timber Creek and Trophy Club Byron Nelson all had two champions.
For the Lady Indians from Keller, Audrey Moore (100) and Bianca Gatto (145) won.
Moore improved to 22-12 with a pin over Keller Fossil Ridge’s Kaden Juarez in a battle of freshmen in the finals.
Gatto pinned her way to the championship….
