Wrestling Team Opens Season In Oklahoma City

Clarksville, Ark.-The University of the Ozarks wrestling team opened the 2016-17 season at the Oklahoma City University Open Sunday, November 6.

A number of Eagle wrestlers won matches at the event.

“I’m really proud of the effort and fight the guys showed overall this weekend,” said head coach LeRoy Gardner. “We’ll continue to improve technically and tactically, but the fight and effort were there. We came away with things to improve on and things we’re executing effectively.”

In the 125-pound division, junior Devon Jackson advanced all the way to the semi-finals. After posting a pair of wins against two Wayland Baptist wrestlers, Jackson finished third. Siaygnoun Nhamnhouane also won two matches in the 125-pound division. Corey Muniz won a round in the freshman-sophomore 125-pound division. Sergio Nugent was another standout on the day, advancing all the way to the finals of the freshman-sophomore 133-pound division. Nugent won by fall and then won by decision before dropping a match in the finals to finish second. Ny’Trell Dean won in a tie-breaker in the freshman-sophomore 149-pound division. Griffin Payne won by fall in the freshman-sophomore 165-pound division. Joey Schenck won three matches in the freshman-sophomore 174-pound division. Jesus Perez won a match in the freshman-sophomore 174-pound division.

“I’m glad we could deliver medals back to campus with Devon placing third with two pinfalls and one technical fall on the day,” said Gardner. “The guy he lost to in the semi-finals went on to win it and Devon was in that match even though the score is a little lopsided. He was two technical errors away from being in the finals. Sergio really showed poise in his first tournament and lost a close match in the finals of his bracket. Mentally he really showed maturity by not getting frustrated or anxious when it was close.”

Ozarks will travel to Arkadelphia for the Hatcher Duals November 12.
