Day 1: Class 5A girls Recap

CYPRESS — A year ago, Northwest High School finished the Class 5A girls’ meet with 14 points.

This time around the high school in Justin has 45 points and is in the driver’s seat to win a state championship on Saturday at the Berry Center. 

Five of the six Texans’ wrestlers are still alive and three of them will be in the semifinals on Saturday morning: Emma Graves, Mackenzie Blue and Trinity Washko.

Graves, ranked No. 3 at 107, beat Comal Smithson Valley’s Alexandria Green by a pin with 3 seconds left in the first period and won 9-2 over El Paso Bel Air’s Nahim Arenas. Graves faces No. 2-ranked Ivory Truitt from Grapevine for the right to move to the finals.

Washko (42-3) reached the 185-pound semifinals with a 10-3 decision over Corpus Christi Moody’s Layla Chap and a pin over Lubbock Cooper’s Avey Mitchell in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, No. 5-ranked Washko faces No. 1-ranked Yamilex Hernandez from La Joya Juarez-Lincoln…
