Chavez Wins OW @ Women’s Preseason Nationals

With 55 women wrestlers from Texas making the journey to Iowa for the USAW Brian Keck Memorial  Preseason Nationals.  Samara Chavez (cover photo from facebook) not only wins another championship but earns Outstanding Wrestler as well.  Texas had 22 placers in all with 6 others getting runner up after making the finals.  At 112 weight where Chavez won her championship, Chavez did so by beating a fellow Texas wrestler Alexis Hanks.  Other notable match ups was Madison Sandquist and Aubrey Yauger both 5A wrestlers met in the semi finals @ 138lbs  with Sandquist getting the 5-3 decision.  Sandquist went on to finish 2nd.  138lb division also had the most wrestlers in the bracket.
Kaycie Tanimoto @ 106 had some notable comebacks after being down several times only to return and make her way to the finals where she had to settle for 2nd place.  Freshman standout Avery Beckman met State Champ Leilani Hernandez in the consolation semi finals with the win going to the senior from Plano West Hernandez.
Olivia DeGeorgio and Kaycie Tanimoto had the top 2 fastest falls in the tournament.
23 girls went 0-2 which was a lot more then normal, having said that, the numbers and strength of women wrestling is gathering momentum vs earlier years as womens wrestling gets larger and larger.  Note the difference in total  high school women wrestlers below.
