CFISD Boys Lower Weight Preview

Preview of the 21st Annual CFISD tournament at the Berry Center in Houston home of the UIL state tournament now just 7 weeks away. One of the biggest UIL tournament in Texas with 90 boys’ teams from around the state all Texas teams and no Prep teams, just a mixture of the 5A and 6A teams. Only 3 top 10 ranked 5A teams and 2, 6A teams #3-5A Comal Smithson Valley, #5-5A Midlothian, #9-5A Uvalde, #5-6A Southlake Carroll, #5-6A Houston Westside are in the 90-team lineup. It can also be argued as the toughest tournament albeit most of the top teams will be at the Texas Outlaw in Allen. Regardless the 6A boys bring 132 top 20 ranked wrestlers and the 5A boys bring 48 top 20 ranked wrestlers. This tournament will be tough, and the wrestler who makes it through the bracket to the finals will be a well-earned champion. This tournament is a majority of 6A teams. This tournament also gives teams a look at other wrestlers in the weight class that they might not have seen or will not see again until state.

Granted a lot of wrestlers might be dropping weight after the Holiday break but below we go through each weight and preview the top 5 ranked wrestlers from the latest rankings and our predictions. Starting with the lower weights 106-144.

106lbs Weight Class (Boys)

This weight has a total of 17 top 20 ranked wresters with 6 coming from 5A. The top ranked wrestlers here for 6A is #2 Dylan Ota of Southlake Carroll whose only loss of the season is a narrow decision against Allen’s Maddox Tindel in a 1-0 decision. Followed by #4 ranked Jack Roland of Rockwall-Heath whose only Texas loses are to Ota, and Chali Perkison of St Marks Prep School. The top 5A wrestlers are #4 Isaiah Deleon of Corpus Christi King who has only lost to the #3-6A wrestler Brandon Patillo of College Park, #3-5A wrestler Lucas Early of Humbvle Kingwood, and last tournament at 113lbs to Luis Vela of CC Veterans Memorial the #7 ranked 5A wrestler. #5 ranked Esteban Vela of CC veterans Memorial rounds out the top 5 ranked wrestlers. My underdog, if you want to call it that, is undefeated Hector Ortiz of El Paso Eastwood who hasn’t had any match ups with any top ranked wrestlers in Texas to move up the ladder.
